  You’ll be spending a really long time with this if using Arcade Battle only. Ranked matches is where you get the most GP.
  
  GP is used to unlock extra characters.
  
  Note: GP was really easy to come by during the week of launch, however, there is now less bonuses given so it will take a little less than 100 matches in Ranked to accomplish this now. Thanks to Shadow Enz for bringing this up.

  Getting daily free 300GP. I only get 100 each day I sign in.

  I've only done maybe 20 online battles, 3 or four with Premium Tickets, and I'm only 1k away...maybe there's something going on like an event or something?

  There's a really good event running now thru the 27th of October and combing that with premium tickets/coins and you'll unlock this and Going for the gold in a rather fast time just playing arcade battle on normal!
  
  I had less than 500,000 Gold and had 6,200 GP before playing today and just knocked out this trophy and Going for the gold in about 2 hours just playing arcade battle on normal!
