Shooting the shield once and then the astronauts themselves will give you a kill.
However there is no need to replay levels killing astronauts instead of saving them. To make this much quicker, when you beat the game within the credits each developer has an astronaut by their name. You get no money for saving them but they WILL count as kills if you shoot them. There are 15 in total, more than enough for the trophy.
