Impossible difficulty is unlocked by beating Dead Space on any difficulty setting.
As you would imagine, this mode is quite hard. Enemies deal a ridiculous amount of damage to you, and they can soak a lot themselves. But with enough patience, efficiency, and a little bit of luck, you'll make it.

If you haven't gotten the "One Gun" trophy yet, I would highly recommend pairing it with your impossible playthrough. Although you may not think so, the Plasma Cutter is the best weapon in the game. It's a hit-scan weapon, which means you can snipe enemies from far away. It's highly versatile and deadly.

If you aren't comfortable doing that, then I would recommend using no more than 2-3 weapons. This will make inventory management and power node usable go much smoother.
(The Force Gun is highly recommend for this route, if only for it's utility. It can be used to deal with swarmers with ease, and push enemies that get too close for breathing room)

Power node rooms are always worth opening.

- Focus on upgrading your Plasma Cutter's damage ASAP. As explained earlier, enemies can take a lot of punishment. It's imperative that you max out your Cutter's damage sooner rather than later. (It should be maxed during Chapter 6) This takes priority over other cutter upgrades.
The less shots it takes to kill an enemy, the less ammo you'll use, and the less chance that enemies will be able to touch you.

- Stasis, use it, abuse it. Stasis is extremely important. It's great to use in a pinch if you find yourself overwhelmed, and is also useful to finish off enemies and save ammo. Simply sever their legs, stasis them, then stomp them until they're dead.
(Enhanced enemies can take up to 6-7 stomps to finish, be careful) It's also important to note that when you upgrade your Stasis Energy, it will automatically recharge. Good thing to keep in mind if you're low on stasis. Most chapters have recharge stations, take note of these. Don't be afraid to use it.

(You'll want energy and recharge upgraded AT LEAST once prior to chapter 5, to make dealing with the hunter less stressful)

- RIG: HP is an important upgrade, but not getting hit can lessen it's usefulness. That said, it is nonetheless a key upgrade. It's also important to note that when you upgrade your RIG HP, it will automatically restore your HP. Good thing to keep in mind if you're low on HP.

Oxygen however is an upgrade that I would recommend skipping. It's only useful in a handful of situations, and since you have completed the game prior you should already know where to go and how to deal with them.
(That said, ONE Oxygen upgrade prior to Chapter 5 is acceptable, to help you deal with the Hunter)

Kinesis is also something to get up maybe once or twice. There's no reason not to max it since it only requires 3 nodes, and it can be useful for grabbing items across rooms without posing danger to yourself.

- This should go without saying, but upgrade your suit asap. The better your suit, the more inventory slots and armor you'll have. It's okay to wait if you are tight on money, but try to plan ahead so you are ready to purchase it. (Chapter 1, 4, 7, 10)

- As I said, take note of Stasis recharge stations. The recharge packs you find are worth 2,500 credits, so it's recommended to sell them. You can keep one on you if you really feel the need to, but due to the stations being so numerous, it's use is questionable.

- Once your RIG HP is upgraded a few times try to keep a Large Med Pack on you at all times. If your health is low, it's far more efficient to use it to fully restore your HP, then to use 2-3 Medium Med Packs.

- Rather than sell excess med packs or cutter ammo, store it in the safe. It's great to have some insurance in case things go badly.

- Don't be lazy. If your inventory is full, return to the shop to sell/store items. Everything in Dead Space is worth credits, including ammo that you may have no use for. In Impossible, you'll need all the credits you can get.

- Be EXTREMELY careful when dealing with Pregnants. Take out their legs first, then wait for them to raise their arms up to crawl toward you. If you pop their stomach, it can be a death sentence if there are other Necromorphs around. Swarmers are extremely annoying to deal with, and can either cause you a ton of damage, or cause you to waste precious ammo.

- Dividers are annoying. Thankfully there is only a few of them in the game. When you destroy them, stasis it right as it falls down to the ground. If timed right, you'll stasis all of it's parts making them easily prey to be shot or stomped.

In Chapter 7: Into the Void in the Zero-G room where you need to clear all of the rocks before you can turn the gravity on, take note of the power node room near the machine. Right after you turn the gravity, rush into the power node room with your back to where all of the items were. Watch the vent. Exploders and Slashers will pile in one by one. Do this until only the Pregnant remains. This trick makes this room trivial, since they'll only be able to come from one direction, instead of two.

In Chapter 11: Alternate Solutions in the cargo bay, if Kinesis is maxed out, you can drag the Marker across almost the entire track from the safety of the upper platform. Slashers and Exploders (If you don't snipe them from the platform prior) will come at you from the one vent next to the upgrade bench, but you'll be safe from the Pregnant and Lurkers.
