It is only available on Hard Difficulty!

You can fight it in the Shinra Combat Simulator in Chapter 17 but it is only unlocked after completing all Corneo Colosseum challenges in Chapter 9/14 and 13 Shinra Combat Simulator challenges in Chapter 17. On lower difficulties it’s unavailable. If you’re missing the Aerith solo challenge in the Corneo Colosseum then reload Chapter 9 and accept the challenge IMMEDIATELY after defeating Hell House. This is the only time in the game that Aerith is available at the Colosseum. If you proceed too far, she will leave the party.

The Pride and Joy fight takes place in the 5th round of the 14th and final challenge, ‘Three-Person Team vs. Top Secrets’. In a slightly bizarre twist, Pride and Joy is arguably the easiest of the 5 rounds, it’s the journey to that fight which is the hard part. You have to face Shiva, Fat Chocobo, Leviathan, Bahamut (who summons Ifrit to aid him at half health) and then Pride and Joy. The 4th fight in particular is easily the hardest fight in the entire game. Luckily, your HP and MP are healed 50% between every round.

In order to face the Pride and Joy Prototype, you'll first square off against the true ultimate boss of the game - Bahamut on Hard difficulty, with Ifrit summoned at his side. The bad news is this boss rush will be brutally punishing. The good news? The rewards are well worth it, and will aid you in attaining the platinum trophy for the game.

Assuming you have met all prerequisites to attempt the 7-star challenge vs. "The Top Secrets" in the Shinra combat simulator, I'm going to break down the boss rush strategy and share the loadout and tips that helped me conquer this outrageous undertaking.

The first three rounds against Shiva, Fat Chocobo, and Leviathan are a piece of cake. If you find yourself struggling whatsoever at this point of the challenge you should pull back and grind AP towards maxing out materia, gaining manuscripts and weapon upgrades.

I used Cloud, Tifa and Barret. My Aerith build has a 450 magic attack stat which is amazing, but her low HP presents too much of a liability. With the inclusion of Barret, everyone was at 9,000+ HP, which is where you're going to want to land.

Materia that will be mandatory: Barrier + Magnify. Try to have Magnify optimized at 3 stars to get the best effect. I didn't bother using Barrier against the first 2 bosses in the gauntlet, but it's an option against Leviathan who can dish out a lot of damage as well as the powerful Tidal Wave. You will want Manawall against Bahamut, but more on that in a minute...

Max Healing and Revival materia are mandatory as well. I had Revival on 2 and Healing on all 3 party members. Pray with 5 stars was a boon here as well. With 2 ATB charges you can heal everyone quickly at no cost to your valuable MP (which only recharges by 50% between rounds).

HP Up you will want about 2 fully maxed out per party member. The goal is 9,000+ HP for everyone. Magic Up and MP Up are an option if you feel they are necessary. You could also consider diverting Elemental materia to your defensive equipment. For example Fire + Elemental on your armor, if fully maxed out, will cause all of Ifrit's attacks to be absorbed and heal you (for the record, I did not slot mine this way for the battle.)

Refocus is great for raising all around stats and Steadfast Block, if maxed out to 3 stars, can be a game-changer. Your party AI typically does a good job of blocking incoming damage so you might as well take as little as possible while inflating your available ATB charges.

Your magic user should have maxed out Fire materia to drill Shiva right away, ideally before she casts Diamond Dust. As mentioned, you can always consider binding it to defensive Elemental materia to save you some headache against Ifrit. Thunder can also be moderately useful in the fight against Leviathan and the Pride and Joy Prototype is weak to it as well.

First Strike is beneficial, especially when you reach Bahamut. He likes to attack physically right from the jump and being able to bait him with Counterstance immediately will help.

The single most critical piece of equipment to bring into battle are Revival Earrings which provide Auto-Life. Manage this carefully, because they will break after the first use. This guarantees whoever remains equipped with the earrings will survive Bahamut's deadly ultimate attack, Megaflare. Although there are other ways.

Now that you have prepped, onto the battle strategy...

Dispatching Shiva should be no issue as she is the easiest fight. Pay attention to Fat Chocobo as he summons Tonberrys who can instantly KO your party members. Immediately target and dispatch them with a single Fire spell. Build up stagger using the Focused Strike / Focused Shot / Focused Slash abilities and take him out without suffering KOs. Remember that keeping your Revival Earrings intact is key.

Leviathan is a longer fight. Chip away at him with some Thunder attacks and concentrate on blocking his named abilities. Cast Manawall ahead of his Tidal Wave and when he enters into his Tidal Roar status I recommend controlling Tifa; due to her high speed she should easily evade his Briny Barrage attacks. Remember to block his Spinning Charge. When Leviathan comes back down from the air hit him hard with abilities and Limit Breaks until he staggers and inevitably falls.

Now for the hard part. When you fight Bahamut, control Cloud be prepared to Counterstance his physical attacks. Time this well and you'll damage him and cause his stagger gauge to incrementally fill. Cast Barrier on your party. His Umbral Strikes are unblockable and almost never miss, usually causing 3,000-4,000 damage to one character. You'll be frequently healing your party so keep a close eye on everyone's health. As he counts down to Megaflare you will have some opportunities to pound him with abilities. If you time it right you should be able to pull off powerful attacks like Infinity's End. Bahamut has no elemental weakness and is immune to everything.

At half HP he will summon Ifrit. If you're dealing enough damage this should occur before Megaflare is cast. Immediately focus all attention on Ifrit. You should have a Limit Break by this point of the fight. Pound Ifrit with it and you should have him around 25% health.

When the countdown reaches one, make sure you cast Manawall and attempt to heal your party fully. Doing so may allow one party member to survive Megaflare if you're fortunate enough. Even if it wipes everyone out, your Revival Earrings will now break and whomever was equipped with them will resurrect. For me it was Barret. However, the reviving party member(s) ATB gauge will reset so you'll have to very quickly fill it and then cast Arise before you are pummeled. Ifrit will still be targeting you as well. Use the second revived character to Arise the last one. If executed correctly you will have everyone back on their feet again but healing will become strategic as you manage what MP you have remaining.

Hit Ifrit with everything you have and finish him off. Now you can focus all attention back to Bahamut. Renew your Barrier, keep healing and use Counterstance at every opportunity to physically repel the beast. When he goes back into the Megaflare countdown this is your chance to deal the killing blows. Switching between characters strategically can help, as can Barret's long-range Overcharge and other weapon abilities like Maximum Fury.

If you can manage to survive you'll enter the Pride and Joy Prototype fight. Remember you only heal 50% HP/MP between rounds so you may still find yourself depleted. Luckily, this boss is a relative pushover. He is weak against lightning so hit him with Thunder if you can spare the MP. Flank him and pound him from behind as this boss is slow to turn around. Watch out for his Catch ability which one-hit kills a party member. Make sure you save enough MP to cast Arise when this happens.

Keep pounding away at him and this battle will be over in no time. You will be awarded with the best accessory in the game, which will make all the rest of your fights considerably easier
