BMO's Trigger Ability comes in the form of his hacking abilities. You may have found some gates locked with computer terminals (or even the sidequest in the Candy Kingdom after helping Marceline get her hat); if you use BMO and press Circle, you will be able to toggle the device into its operative form. Using this, you can open gates in the forest and proceed further into some secret locations.
