To unlock the "I'LL BE BACK" trophy in Detroit: Become Human, you must make sure that Connor is killed whenever possible.
You MUST do this from a New Story and play the game through in order. I tested this in multiple playthroughs and the trophy did not unlock until I started a new story.
However thanks to comments on this solution from
Rav3nDK_72 and
Animanis it appears that you can go back several chapters to correct a mistake, as long as you continue to "overwrite" the story by playing every subsequent chapter up to the point you previously reached. A hypothetical example: if you realise something is up during Chapter 10 due to a decision made in Chapter 6, you can't go to Chapter 6, change the decision, and hop back in Chapter 10 expecting things to be different. Chapter 10 will still be "reading" the game's current state of play from Chapter 9. You have to "overwrite" Chapters 6 through 10 in order for Chapter 10 to reflect your altered decisions.
As multiple deaths lead to a very singular story experience and locks you out of a number of other trophies, I suggest leaving this until last. If you've done everything else you need to with Kara and Markus you can speed this playthrough up considerably by
In addition, you need to make Hank really hate you before you get to "THE BRIDGE". Naturally that's going to make it pretty impossible for you to get this:
Here is an optimal playthrough of the game to get this trophy as quickly as possible, bear in mind that you'll be locked out of a vast number of other trophies if you still need them.
Oh, one more thing - there's a crucial choice to make in LAST CHANCE, CONNOR that nearly every guide out there seems to have failed to mention, which I learned far too late... see below in the spoiler tags!
THE HOSTAGE - Death Opportunity*** Spoiler - click to reveal ***Walk straight through the apartment to Captain Allen and talk to him. Go through the two dialogue prompts. Turn from him and go straight to the balcony window. Go outside (you'll have to confirm that you want to go out rather than keep investigating). Walk straight up to Daniel as soon as you can. Choose whatever prompts you feel and then sacrifice yourself when you get the chance (you'll either get a prompt to take this option if you dismiss the helicopter, or if you don't dismiss it and fail to negotiate completely, Connor will automatically sacrifice himself provided you are close enough.)
SHADES OF COLOUR*** Spoiler - click to reveal ***Walk directly ahead all the way across the street, through the square and to the paint shop. Buy the paint and on the way back out, turn right and hug the right wall all the way around to CyberLife and approach the bus from behind the protesters, saving you have to go through their interaction with you.
A NEW HOME*** Spoiler - click to reveal ***Enter the house with Todd, scan the environment briefly and then head straight to the kitchen. Pick up the trash can to your left and clean the counter to your right, the kitchen side to your left and the coffee table in front of the TV. Take the trash outside, report to Todd. Head upstairs, tidy the music cabinet in Todd's room, make the bed, tidy the cabinet opposite the foot of the bed and pick up the pamphlet that drops to the floor. Tidy the guitar and the left-hand bedside table (you don't have to interact with the right-hand one, with the pill bottle on). Go to Alice's room. Open the back window and make the bed. Interact with Alice however you like. No need to open the box, just head downstairs.
THE PAINTER*** Spoiler - click to reveal ***Put the box on the side table and head upstairs. Draw the curtains and administer the medicine. Help Carl to the restroom and then wheel him to the stairs. Head down and wheel him from the bottom. Go through the doors opposite the front door and park Carl at the dining table to the left. Head through the door ahead to the kitchen and grab breakfast. Set it down for Carl and head to the bookshelves over on the left. Pick any book to read. Wheel Carl out to the studio, take the sheet off and clean the four points in the room. The rest of this chapter plays out at the same pace no matter what you choose so pick whatever options you feel like.
PARTNERS*** Spoiler - click to reveal ***Make sure to find the deviant and annoy Hank as much as you can.
Head straight to Hank at the back of the main bar, scan him and talk to him. Threaten, Persist, Spill His Drink. Choose Firm in the car. You only need to interact with critical evidence in the house. Go straight to the kitchen and interact with the bat, reconstruct the scene. Wait to be able to examine the body. Analyze the two head points, the wound and his hand. Report to Lt Anderson. ...In the Kitchen, With the Bat, The Android Stabbed the Victim, The Living Room, With the Knife. Head to the kitchen and take a left. Scan the area, investigate the ladder imprint on the left of the corridor and then look up at the attic. Go into the kitchen, grab the chair and place it down. Head up into the attic and keep pushing ahead until the chapter closes.
STORMY NIGHT*** Spoiler - click to reveal ***Kara and Alice need to survive this chapter. Take the plates from the kitchen to the dining room table, and turn the light on behind you. Wait for things to play out. Attempt to move, and attempt to move again. Break through the red wall. Head straight upstairs and straight to Alice's bedroom at the back and walk up to her. Choose Lock Door, then actually lock the door, interact with the window (DO NOT talk to Alice). Choose to go out and then choose Join Alice. Pass the QTEs and run for the bus.
There's no more efficient or useful way to play through
BROKEN, it's short anyway, so just follow your prompts and make your choices.
THE INTERROGATION - Death Opportunity*** Spoiler - click to reveal ***Just sit straight down and start Interrogate. Name, Threaten, Probe Memory, Truth, Truth, Probe Its Memory. Follow the on-screen prompts. Make sure to move closer to the android before you leave and select "Cold". Then "Intervene". This is the fastest route but will stop you getting the following if you still need it:
FUGITIVES*** Spoiler - click to reveal ***Wake Alice up and walk straight off the bus, ignoring the talk options. Walk straight up the road and take a right at the squat. Comfort Alice at the bus stop and let the scene play out. Head on down the side of the road with the bus stop until you see a gate in the fence on the left. Look in and then go in. Look in the abandoned car and smash the window. Open the back door and choose to get in, twice. Interact with Alice with whatever options you like.
FROM THE DEAD*** Spoiler - click to reveal ***Interact in the only way you can all the way through until you've walked through the corridor of hands. Head around the right side of the junkyard until you see a head on the floor that you can interact with. Take its eye. Head towards the very edge of the hill of bodies that will take you out of the area and find the torso you can interact with. Take its core. The camera will turn back into the main junkyard, immediately to your right is body sitting upright. Interact and takes its audio processor. Walk to the slope and choose to climb it. Follow all the QTEs until the end of the chapter.
WAITING FOR HANK...*** Spoiler - click to reveal ***Annoy Hank as much as possible.Head straight over the left-hand bridge to the centre of the Zen Garden and interact with Amanda. Choose whatever options you like. At the police station, interact with the receptionist and head out back. Hank's desk is on the far side in the middle. Look at his name plate, sit down, get back up again. Analyze his desk, all eight points of interaction. Wait for Hank's conversation with his boss to play out, either go in or hang around outside. Interact with Hank when he's back at his desk. Choose New Connor, Partners, Desk. Sit at your desk. Choose Anti-Androids and Hours. Start Working. Access the files, scroll through a few then scan them all. Choose Aggressive and Threaten.
ON THE RUN - Death Opportunity (Plus, Speed Up Your Playthrough)*** Spoiler - click to reveal ***Kara and Alice MUST fail to sneak past the police and MUST make it at least halfway across the highway. However you do not need to keep them alive after Connor is dead so feel free to let them go on the second half of the highway, significantly shortening the rest of your playthrough (unless you have trophies you want to unlock that are specific to their storyline.) Assuming you slept in the car, get out and grab the scissors stabbed into a tyre. Change your hair. Attempt to pop the trunk then grab the crowbar on the floor. Open the trunk and change. Look out of the gate at the far end of the yard. Go back and wake Alice up. Look out of the gate again. Once you regain control, immediately allow yourself to be spotted by the first police officer.
As Connor, sprint immediately to your indicated destination. Keep sprinting to the fence. You must keep up with Kara in this sequence, and in the following sequence you must keep Kara alive until Connor is on the highway. Pass the QTEs on the highway to get Kara and Alice to the centre. If you have been playing on Casual up until this point and are happy to lose Kara and Alice for the rest of this playthrough to speed it up, PAUSE as soon as Kara and Alice get to the centre. Change your difficulty settings to Experienced, you can only do this while there are no prompts on the screen. On Experienced we can ensure everyone dies. Resume play, choose to keep going when Hank tries to stop you. Make sure to pass the first couple of QTEs to actually get you onto the highway, and then just ignore them all to allow Connor to die. Now ignore all of the prompts for Kara and Alice and they won't make it either. You'll now have far fewer chapters to play though without losing any opportunities to get Connor killed. I'd recommend returning to Casual difficulty at the earliest opportunity.
JERICHO*** Spoiler - click to reveal ***No choices in this chapter will affect the trophy, but here's a quick guide to speed you through it. The first symbol is directly left of your starting point on the wall. Head straight down the escalator (the human lanes). The next symbol is on the wall outside directly opposite the station exit. One symbol is by the lion's head, the other is on the right-hand boxer's shorts. Carry on up the road and go straight across the crossing ahead. Turn right and look for a rainbow mural on a building corner above a fence. One symbol is obvious on the corner of the bulding, the other is on the front below the windows. Keep heading down this side of the street and as the path curves to the left, you'll see another fence with some robot grafitti on the wall. Scan the symbol above the first robot and the symbol on the chest of the third. Try to focus on the last robot's chest. You'll get a prompt to crouch through the gap in the fence. Remove the pallet leaning against the wall. Scan the symbol underneath. Head further down the alley to the back wall where you can see a large grafitti of an android's head. Scan the symbol over its eye and, barely visible in white, another symbol in the machiner of its brain. Grab the blue dumpster nearby and drag it. Climb on top. You'll see the third symbol in black at the back of the android's head. Preconstruct the route, choose the left option followed by the upper option.
Head forward and drop off the roof. Scan the "Detroit Sparkle City" mural. One symbol is right at the bottom of the mural, another is barely visible between the words Sparkle and City. The third is directly below the fire escape. Preconstruct again, take the left option, the left option and the right option. Head through into the large open space, head towards the back windows and turn to your left, look back towards the opposite wall. You should see the outline of a red symbol if you line up the right-most pillar with the back wall. Head through the gap in the wall and up the stairs. Go straight to the left edge of this roof and jump up onto the tower. Head up and all the way to the end of the crane, jump off. Head out of the water and through the yellow door, grab the torch on the wall. Keep pushing ahead until you see another yellow door. Ignore it, turn left and then right. You'll see someone run across, turn right after them. Take a left after the debris, head through and down the stairs onto a gangway. Walk forward, get up and pick up your torch when prompted.
THE NEST - Death Opportunity*** Spoiler - click to reveal ***Walk up to Hank to immediately get on his nerves, no other interaction required. Follow Hank to the apartment, you'll be able to knock once Hank leans on the door frame. Knock twice. Wait for Hank to bust into the back room with the pigeons. Wait for him to get out of the way to the bathroom. Scan the writing on the wall. Analyze the stool and check the two analysis points. Reconstruct. Head back into the main room and fully analyze the fallen bird cage. Reconstruct again, you'll have to swing the view left on the second two reconstruction points to analyze your target. Interact with the chair to start the chase.
You need to keep up with the suspect until you start sliding down a roof. Choose whatever paths you want for the first three decision points, just make sure you pass any QTEs. When you start sliding down a glass roof towards a smashed window in the next building, ignore all QTEs.
TIME TO DECIDE*** Spoiler - click to reveal ***Choose whatever dialogue prompts you feel like taking at the beginning. When you can explore Jericho, there are only two interactions you have to make: head straight forward into the curtained area to interact with Lucy, then head all the way to the opposite end and interact with the CyberLife boxes. Speak to Simon.
RUSSIAN ROULETTE*** Spoiler - click to reveal ***Head around the right side of the Zen Garden to find Amanda. Respond however you wish. Head straight round the right side of Hank's house and look through the back window. Break in. Analyze Hank, then get through the bathroom scene, select Leave. Pick whatever clothes you like from the bedroom. Interact with the kitchen table, then the upturned photo on it. Analyze it. Interact with the gun on the floor.
SPARE PARTS - Speed Up Playthrough Opportunity*** Spoiler - click to reveal ***DO NOT take the maintenance android with you if you want to end Markus' story early for efficiency. At the start just keep pushing forward through all the prompts. When you see the surveillance drone, preconstruct and choose the left option, the left option again, then the upper option. Mash when you reach the drone. Open the crates as prompted. The quickest way out of this chapter is to simply hide when the maintenance android shows up, note that this will bring your Jericho ratings down significantly. Run for the fence to leave.
THE EDEN CLUB - Speed Up Playthrough Opportunity*** Spoiler - click to reveal ***Head straight into the club and into the room when you get the opportunity. Analyze the victim and reconstruct. Analyze the dead android and diagnose, then Connect. Choose whatever options you want or let the timers run down. IF HANK IS HOSTILE AND YOU DON'T NEED THE "RUTHLESS" TROPHY, don't interact with any androids once you leave the crime scene. Just let Hank's two conversations play out and select "Give Up" to end this scene nice and quick. If Hank is not fully hostile you need to play this chapter out properly, you should follow this guide for Ruthless to get him the rest of the way:
THE BRIDGE - Death Opportunity*** Spoiler - click to reveal ***Hank MUST be fully Hostile in this scene, and it helps if you saw the photo of his son in "RUSSIAN ROULETTE". Go up to Hank, "Personal Question", "Photo", then any option. Choose "Cold", "Cold", "Cynical", "Not Alive", "Defy".
THE STRATFORD TOWER - Speed Up Playthrough Opportunity*** Spoiler - click to reveal ***If you want to end Markus' story prematurely to speed things up, you should make sure Simon dies in this chapter. Head to the left side of the reception desk and Analyze all points on the human receptionist. Call, and choose any option. Go to the android receptionist and interact with her. Head up in the elevator. The bathroom is at the opposite end of the floor. Interact with the last stall in the bathroom. Once changed, head back out and get into News Room 02 directly ahead (there's an entrance to either side). Connect with the android fixing the wall panel. Take his maintenance cart, push it all the way to the end of the corridor and take a right. Open the emergency exit at the far side. Follow North. When she stops, take a right and hack the vending machine. Lock the door, take the bag, cut the window. Climb out and up and cut through again. Call the lift, open the door. Ruse or Assault the security guards, note that Assault will annoy Josh and injure Simon (if that matters to you). If you want to get Simon killed, you MUST spare the fleeing broadcast employee. Choose whatever you like for the broadcast options. When prompted, Save Simon rather than fleeing to get him to the roof. Shoot him when given the opportunity, then jump off the building.
PUBLIC ENEMY - Death Opportunity*** Spoiler - click to reveal ***NOTE: Hank's attitude towards you is less important from this point on, but there's not much point trying to make friends with him at this late stage anyway. Find Amanda in a boat next to the central island of the Zen Garden and row her out into the water. Say whatever you want during the dialogue. When you get to the broadcast tower, head straight in and meet the FBI agent.
Some players have had trouble during LAST CHANCE CONNOR so I am adding a step here that might resolve it. Worth noting I didn't need it in my playthrough, but it won't cost you much time to do it just in case:Watch Markus' speech from the centre of the console in front of the main screen.
Check the CCTV footage on the right-hand console under the main screen. Go into the kitchen behind the central console and interrogate the three androids. The left one seems to always be the deviant. Push all questions his way and he should attack you before you have to probe his memory, do so if he hasn't gotten spooked beforehand. Fail the QTEs immediately. You must escape death here and chase down the android or you will reach a game over state for Connor in a later chapter. Look left to remove the knife then crawl to your bio-component on the floor. Head forward into the corridor, look to Hank on the left and make sure to choose to protect him.
CAPITOL PARK - Speed Up Playthrough Opportunity*** Spoiler - click to reveal ***Let the initial scene play out and exit the manhole. Head straight over to the CyberLife store. Analyze it. Scan the camera up and to the right inside the store and decrypt its route. Follow the red line projected under the floor across the road to the maintenance workers. Allow yourself to get spotted by the drone by looking directly at it. Let the timer run out on the police discovering you to end the chapter prematurely.
MEET KAMSKI
FREEDOM MARCH - Speed Up Playthrough Opportunity*** Spoiler - click to reveal ***We can finally end Markus' story early to speed up our final few deaths. Walk ahead to the end of the girder. Choose Lie, then any option, then Avoid, then Leave. Walk all the way through the mall and convert just the security guard at the door. Veer left outside and go to the Fuse truck. Go to the manhole cover on the far side of where that truck has come to a halt. Let your people out, convert one additional android (e.g. the Kara-like nanny on the left side of the street) and walk all the way down the street. When you finally get to the SWAT firing squad, choose "Stand Your Ground", "Stand Your Ground" and "Sacrifice".
LAST CHANCE, CONNOR - Death Opportunity*** Spoiler - click to reveal ***Walk over to Amanda on the ice and interact. Let the scene play out, Hank should leave so you have to distract Perkins yourself. If this does not happen and you are deactivated due to insufficient evidence, it's likely because you did not see the Stratford Tower android open fire on Hank and the police in PUBLIC ENEMY by escaping his attack in the kitchen. It's been confirmed that you can revert back to that chapter, correct the issue and continue from there.
Time is of the essence here, you need to successfully get the location of Jericho. Head to the back holding cells behind the Captain's office and let the guy out of the cell. Head to Hank's desk and pick up the key. Go to the archive room. CHOOSE "LEAVE" WHEN CHRIS CONFRONTS YOU, THIS IS IMPORTANT. Most other guides seem to have missed the fact that you can avoid confrontation with Chris later in the chapter if you choose to have a calm chat with him. But we want him to attack us!
Head into the evidence room. Hank's password contains a swear word. You won't have much time at all in here so act quickly. Go to the broadcast center droid on the right and analyze it. Note which component it needs. Take this from Daniel, the android from the first chapter, on the left, and put it in the broadcast droid. Attempt to trick it. Go to the central shelves and pick up the pad with Markus' speech on it. Copy his voice. Go back to the broadcast droid and trick it with Markus' voice. Lose the fight against Chris to get killed.
CROSSROADS - Death Opportunity*** Spoiler - click to reveal ***Look at your palm to decode the trail to Jericho. You'll skip the whole trail and end up in the ship. Head straight to the stairs ahead to the right. Let the scene play out, choose Cold options when given the chance. You'll only be able to Remain a Machine by this point. Let the scene play out again. When the soldier attempts to stop you, choose to Run and you'll be killed.
NIGHT OF THE SOUL - Likely Trophy Unlock
It seems almost unanimous across various sites that the trophy will unlock at this point, as it did for me, despite the fact that Connor still has remaining chances to die. Perhaps "...before the end" in the trophy description means "...before the last chapter". But in case it doesn't unlock for you (or this early unlock is a bug that gets patched), here's the final opportunities.
BATTLE FOR DETROIT - Two Death Opportunities*** Spoiler - click to reveal ***Set up the gun and you will be confronted by Captain Allen from the first chapter. Talk to him and either Flee or lose the Fight. Then let the timer run out on the final decision with North.
It's worth noting that you'll also get the following trophy in the final chapter if you haven't already, so it's worth seeing through:
As always, the trophy will unlock when you reach the flowchart at the end of the chapter, whether that's after NIGHT OF THE SOUL or BATTLE FOR DETROIT.
