You don't need to have the gun if you knock over the cans in the store and steal the money during the distraction.

If you won't want to steal the clothes and the money, there is a place in the fence to the house where it will tell you that you need wire cutters. Go into the parking lot and you will find them on a yellow generator and you can clip a fence from that area also. Now you need to get inside. This is a little less straightforward than you might think. Just be nice to the guy that shows up and he will let you inside. It's linear from there.

To earn the "SHELTER" trophy in Detroit: Become human, you must complete the chapter "FUGITIVES" and do so by either staying in the Motel, or the abandoned house opposite it. There are a number of ways to achieve this. Below is one route to staying in the motel, though it relies on you having seen the gun in "A NEW HOME" and taken it in "STORMY NIGHT".

Leave the bus, walk up the road and investigate the hotel. Turn around and enter the laundromat. Carefully steal all the clothes. Head back out and walk towards the 24/7 convenience store. Alice will wander off to the bus stop, go and interact with her. Afterwards, go into the 24/7. Ask the cashier for money and then draw your gun. Be honest and reasonable with the cashier but don't lower the gun. When he pulls a gun on you, once again be sincere but firm. You'll get the cash.

Head back over to the motel, talk to the man. Tell him you don't have your license. Head out to room 28 (upstairs, second door). Turn on the light and take Alice's clothes. Hang them on the radiator behind the door in the bathroom. Talk to Alice, turn off the light and choose where you will sleep. When you reach the flowchart the trophy will unlock.
