More Gems Are Better Than None trophy in Crash Bandicoot

If you are getting a Gem in every level that you can without back tracking, then you will unlock this once you get the Gem from Slippery Climb. To unlock a gem, you need to collect all crates in a level. I will list every level and mention if they need a coloured gem to obtain the gem. Unlocking 13 gems in levels of your choice will unlock this trophy and you will have to get all 26 gems in the game for the trophy

For the normal gems, you can die and restart from a checkpoint to unlock it.

For a special coloured gem, you have to do the run without dying. You can die in a bonus stage and still get it, as long as you repeat the bonus stage and get all boxes. Deaths prior to any checkpoints do not void the special gem, so you can just retry from the beginning again without having to exit the level and start again.

All the levels that give a gem and any special information:

N. Sanity Beach
Jungle Rollers - This needs the Green Gem
The Great Gate - This needs the Gold Gem
Boulders
Upstream - This needs the Yellow Gem
Rolling Stones - This needs the Blue Gem
Hog Wild
Native Fortress - This needs the Red Gem

Up The Creek
The Lost City - Green Special Gem unlock so you can't die except on bonus stages
Temple Ruins
Road to Nowhere - This needs the Red Gem
Boulder Dash - This needs the Purple Gem
Whole Hog - This is at a fork in the road from Boulder Dash, you need the key from Sunset Vista to access this level

Heavy Machinery
Cortex Power - This needs the Blue Gem
Generator Room - Yellow Special Gem unlock so you can't die except on bonus stages
Toxic Waste - Blue Special Gem unlock so you can't die except on bonus stages
The High Road
Slippery Climb - Red Special Gem unlock so you can't die except on bonus stages
Lights Out - Purple Special Gem unlock so you can't die except on bonus stages. This one needs the Gold Gem
Fumbling in the Dark - This is at a fork in the road from Light Out, you need the key from Jaws of Darkness to access this level
Jaws of Darkness - This needs the Blue Gem
Castle Machinery
The Lab - Gold Special Gem unlock so you can't die except on bonus stages

Regarding the levels where you can earn a special gem for beating the level without dying: if you die before the first checkpoint, can you still earn the gem when it sends you back to the beginning of the level? Or do you have to quit to the level select menu and reload the level?

You will get it if you never reached a checkpoint and had to restart. I will add that to the solution. It would be a nightmare without at least that option as I died so many times whilst learning the levels

There isn't a good answer for that. There are about 10 of them that do not need special gems in some way. The special gem needs you to learn a level until you can do it without dying, so you will have to practise at least 1 of the special coloured gem stages if you want the 13 of them
