This counts across characters and includes lootable corpses as well. It may include other objects if you press [cn_LT] to open them. Even if you only get the ones on the main path, you can easily get this before the end of the game. If you turn on enemy respawning, the chests will respawn, too, and you can count them towards this achievement.
