This is the final boss of the game whose elemental affinity is dark, so use of luminous moss and accessories to reduce dark damage are recommended. Even with high leveled party members (40+), he can still hit for 200+ damage on his main attack. Because of this, it is recommended you take a conservative approach to this battle.

Bring your most powerful characters as well as two well equipped long range attackers (your best options being Maru, Camellia, and possibly Paulette. If you have both secret characters, they are also a good choice as they have good long range attacks).

If using Maru (highly recommended), equip him with the crystal arrowhead (+10 damage + light damage) you should've received from the Cave of Truth, as well as the weathercock (increase HIT to 100 and increases range) which you hopefully picked up in Mt. Lamda. Round him out with a diamond coating and a gale headband/titanium armband.

I also recommend using Paulette as your second long range attacker assuming you picked up her snake wire weapon part in Maluise Tower. This extends her range significantly, and her base attack is significantly better than Camellias, and Paulette has a much better skill set as well. Equip her with Snake wire and 2 diamond coatings. For accessories give her 2 titanium armbands and Frey’s Hair Ornament (50% reduction on all elemental damage including dark).

The other people you bring into battle are almost inconsequential; as long as they can one/two shot the brain cells that the Lord of the Black Abyss spawns, it doesn't matter who you use. Make sure they are stocked with healing items and revival medicines just in case your character wanders too far from the edge and get's one-shotted.

Battle formation: Move Maru and Paulette (opposite sides) JUST close enough so that their regular attacks hit him. You'll want to make sure they are flush against the sides of the arena. This will prevent them from being hit by his HP absorbing attack (if they are too close), and will also prevent them from getting hit by his main dark based attack that hits anyone even a few steps away from the wall. The rest of your party can be evenly divided on both sides, but behind Maru and Paulette.

Strategy: Once your team is in the positions mentioned above, take out the brain cells that the Lord of the Dark Abyss spawns. After you take out 5, the dark shield surrounding him will fade, and you will be able to hit him for full power. Use your best skills against him that Maru/Paulette have, until they run out of spirit stones. At this point, just keep using regular attacks when his shield falls. After 5 or 6 times of his dark shield falling, it will stay down. He'll still spawn brain cells, but they won't be tied to his shield. Keep destroying them and damaging him, and you will slowly, but surely, prevail. He has 5000 HP, so the battle will take a little while.
