  Difficulty: Seriously easy
  
  You can do this at the first space station you encounter at the very first part of the game.
  Simply go to the bar to meet Orzu and complete his first mission. This will supply you with enough cash to return and hire the Mercenary.
  
  Note: You can only have 1 mercenary at a time and they are much cheaper at the start of the game.

  Correct, my memory served me badly. Complete the first mission and that should do it buddy.

  Yep, I only had to go out and do one mission as the first Merc is around 1700, and the first mission I done gave me about 1900 :)
