Not many will be surprised that Elden Ring, one of the best games on PS5 and one of the best games on PS4, has made it this far in the competition. With God of War Ragnarok sailing past Stray in the first semi-final, it looks like we're on course for a recount of The Game Awards final GOTY count — a count which Elden Ring won.

However, something that feels genuinely surprising is just how far Crisis Core Reunion has come. In truth, this might have more to do with favourable match-ups — The Devil in Me, Metal Hellsinger, and Tiny Tina's Wonderlands simply lack the profile of a Final Fantasy. Just to be clear, our Crisis Core Reunion review recommended players check the game out, not champion it as the year's finest offering! Still, quite the statement that would make on the state of games in 2022 — we can't help hedging our bets a little on this.
