Resident Evil 4 Remake makes top five most popular PS5, PS4 games

By Kes Eylers-Stephenson,

Resident Evil 4 has mopped up the PS Plus Extra competition as it enters the top five most popular PS5 and PS4 games for the week.

The scary times are back as players pick up Resident Evil 4 trophies and hope to live another day for another round of bingo. With PS Plus Extra also hitting the chart, the top 40 most popular PS5 and PS4 games have stiff competition this week!

The top of the chart tends to be a static mix of games like Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, Fortnite, and FIFA 23 in a post-Hogwarts Legacy release window world, but Resident Evil 4 has come out swinging on PS5 and PS4. Its total player count is straddled pretty much bang on between FIFA 23 in third and Grand Theft Auto V in fifth. That is a superb place to be, frankly — though we will delve into specific data in a separate story

Across the rest of the chart, it's worth noting that the PS Plus Essential games for March 2023 have been incredibly successful. We've dug deeper into the Battlefield 2042's PS Plus boom and now it's risen to fifth suggesting the modern war FPS appetite is incredibly strong even with Call of Duty dominating. Minecraft Legends is still in the top 20 suggestings staying power, and Code Vein is still in the chart at 38th, too.

Then we move on to PS Plus Extra and Premium for March 2023. It's a massive caul of class additions, but Tchia is the clear big winner. Sean loved it in our Tchia review and — while we can't compare it to Stray as our datasets have undergone a change between now and then — the success of both on day one might make a few indie devs have a think about day one PS Plus.

Games like Uncharted Legacy of Thieves are missing (again, superb — check out our Uncharted Legacy of Thieves Collection review) which might suggest that Uncharted has reached its maximal audience amongst hardcore PlayStation fans who would subscribe to Extra. GhostWire Tokyo and Dragonball Z Kakarot have also performed wonderfully at 30th and 31st, respectively. As we will delve into further in a separate article, Untitled Goose Game is probably the second huge winner as it reaches 36th — for a lauded indie from years ago, that is a fantastic finish.

So, a huge PS Plus week with a big AAA game in Resident Evil 4 remastered! Some mighty successes here: what do you think of them? Let us know in the comments. Here are the top 40 most popular PS5 and PS4 games in the PlayStation Gameplay Chart for the week ending March 26th, 2023.
