The Sinking City trophies are a glorious batch of Lovecraftian gems to work through. Sadly, the game never saw the love it truly deserved. Seriously, if this game was available on PS Plus, we do not doubt for a second that it would be near the top of our list of underrated PS Plus games. This is what makes the recent The Sinking City 2 PS5 release reveal so much more surprising.

The Sinking City 2 comes to PS5 in 2025

The Sinking City 2 was announced at the Xbox Showcase that took place on Wednesday, March 6, 2024, and was quite an unexpected appearance. The original title came out in 2019 and while it became a cult classic among fans who played it, The Sinking City never reached the heights it was truly capable of. So, seeing a sequel be made for this cult classic is a welcome treat and a title I am most excited for.
I absolutely adore the original game and all of its creepy Lovecraftian imagery, and it looks like developers Frogwares are planning on upping the horror ante in this sequel. The trailer (embedded above) looks more horrifying than the original, with more grotesque monsters and tentacles to hound us at every corner we take. While I enjoyed the blend of horror and action adventure the original offered up, I am all for the sequel taking a deeper dive into the horror genre and cementing itself there.

The first Sinking City game sees you playing as a private investigator and war veteran Charles W. Reed. The title is set in the 1920s on the East Coast of the United States, where you will explore the half-submerged city of Oakmont that is overwhelmed by supernatural goings-on. It's up to you to uncover the truth of this possessed city and battle against all kinds of Lovecraftian foes.

The Sinking City 2 will once again be set in a Lovecraftian 1920s United States. However, the sequel will tell a separate and standalone story from its predecessor. This means you don't necessarily have to play the first game if you don't want to. Although we highly recommend checking it out, as we have stated countless times throughout this article, it is a fantastic game with a brilliant story to get wrapped up in.
I really enjoyed The Sinking City and its detective gameplay — it adds a fun mechanic to the game world aside from running around and shooting strange beasts. While I'm looking forward to the newfound focus on horror, I still hope that developer Frogwares provides detailed detective moments where we solve crimes and piece together the many mysteries unfolding around us. I feel like the sequel would lose some of its charm if not.

What do you think of The Sinking City 2 being announced? Are you excited to see if the game can worm its way onto our list of the best horror games on PS5? Let us know all your thoughts in the comments below!
