It's been quite a while since the launch of those SteamWorld Heist trophies, and we know that because they launched on the now-dead PS Vita back in 2016. Despite being one of the best PS Vita games and having received big praise from critics, we've had to wait eight long years for the turn-based tactics shooter to receive a sequel. However, good things come to those who wait — SteamWorld Heist 2's PS5 and PS4 release date has finally arrived.

SteamWorld Heist 2 is coming to PS5 and PS4 this August

First revealed at the Nintendo Indie World showcase for April 2024, it has since been confirmed that SteamWorld Heist 2 will also be launching for PS5 and PS4 on Thursday, August 8, 2024. As much as it would have delighted all of us here on the TrueTrophies writing team, unfortunately, the game will not be getting a PS Vita release.
You can check out SteamWorld Heist 2's reveal trailer above, which confirms that the same skill-based tactical action gameplay from the original SteamWorld Heist will make a return. The biggest change for the sequel, aside from the addition of real-time naval combat, is that the first game's steampunk space pirate theme is getting swapped out for a delightfully breezy steampunk regular pirate theme.

There's also the fact that the sequel won't be natively available on a PlayStation handheld, which is a pretty big change. While SteamWorld Heist also saw a PS4 release, personally, I think Heist felt more at home on the PS Vita. The game's short missions and Angry Birds-level trial-and-error gameplay felt tailor-made for handhelds. It's not a wonder why SteamWorld Heist 2 was first revealed for Nintendo Switch — no doubt that's the current-gen console that makes the most sense for it.
I suppose we could also break out the PlayStation Portal and stream the sequel from our PS5 there, but that's not really the same thing, is it? I liked playing the original game in short bursts on the fly when I was out and about. Sadly, that's not something I can actually do with the PlayStation Portal's reliance on local Wi-Fi.

So, as much as I'm looking forward to the release of SteamWorld Heist 2, I'm afraid it has just reminded me that we still going to need a new PlayStation handheld if we're going to fully enjoy games like this one. Still, I'm looking forward to finally playing a sequel to one of my favorite PS Vita games — how about you? Let me know down in the comments below.
