Star Wars Battlefront II is big on PS4, but we need Battlefront III

Star Wars Battlefront II's PS4 player count remains consistently high, making us wonder: why hasn't Star Wars Battlefront III shown up on PS5 yet?

Fans have likely long picked up all of those Star Wars Battlefront II trophies — after all, the PS4 shooter turned five years old in 2023. Yet, even after a massive controversy and a rough launch, Star Wars Battlefront II's PS4 player count remains shockingly high in 2024. So, it begs the question: where is Star Wars Battlefront III? We know Battlefront II didn't quite live up to our standards for the best PS4 games list, but surely a sequel still has potential?

Battlefront II is still in the top 100 most-played PS5 and PS4 games of 2024

  • Star Wars Battlefront II remains consistently in the top 100 popular PS5 and PS4 games
  • 2023's Star Wars Jedi Survivor only has 46.75% more active players than Battlefront II
  • Publisher EA has not yet confirmed production on Star Wars Battlefront III
According to our exclusive gameplay data from 3.2 million active PSN accounts (courtesy of our partnership with GameInsights), Star Wars Battlefront II was the 82nd most popular game played by PS5 and PS4 players for the week ending Sunday, January 7, 2024.
For comparison, Star Wars Jedi Survivor — one of the top 10 biggest PS5 games of 2023 — was the 56th most popular game of that same sample period. Jedi Survivor still has at least 46.75% more players than Battlefront II, but that's really more of a testament to how popular Battlefront II remains even after five years.

Especially after the dramatically awful launch the PS4 game saw back in 2017. In case you don't recall, Star Wars Battlefront II found itself the primary target of 2017's vocal backlash to AAA games featuring loot boxes. In response, EA took the game's microcurrency offline for a few months while it retuned the game.

PS5 and PS4 games less popular than Battlefront II in 2024

  • Fallout 4 and Fallout 76
  • Monster Hunter Rise
  • Remnant II
  • Battlefield V
  • The Elder Scrolls Online
  • Call of Duty: WWII
  • Dark Souls III and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
  • No Man's Sky
  • Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
Unfortunately, the move didn't fix Battlefront II's image problem and the game fell short of its sales target. EA even acknowledged that it was likely the controversy that led to the dip in sales expectations.

So, if you're curious why there hasn't been a massive amount of buzz for a Star Wars Battlefront III, it's probably due to all the bad rep Battlefront II earned at launch. Since then, EA has announced that Respawn Entertainment is working on a new Star Wars first-person shooter alongside their next Star Wars Jedi title, but there's no word whether this will be a continuation of DICE's work on the Star Wars Battlefront series.

However, with such a strong online community on PS4 alone, you have to imagine that EA must be considering a Battlefront III, right? I mean, sure, they fumbled the bag with Battlefront II, but that hardly means a sequel should be ruled out entirely. In fact, I think Battlefront III on PS5 would afford EA a do-over with the series' reputation.

Battlefront III could be an exciting prospect for PS5 players

I'm sure Battlefront III could lure a lot of players back to the series should DICE just put their incredible knack for gorgeous graphics to the test on PS5. It was nice and all to see some cool Star Wars iconography in Jedi Survivor on PS5 last year, but I still remember being blown away by the immersion offered by 2015's Star Wars Battlefront. Having an upgraded version of that experience on PS5 would certainly pique my interest.

I also remember falling off Battlefront II's online multiplayer progression due to its awkward, grindy character progression — something I tend to rely on to drive me forward into the next match. Battlefront III would offer EA and DICE the chance to retune things properly next time, taking lessons from how games have managed this over the last five years.
Pair that with some sort of campaign mode that feels a little less awful to play and features writing a little bit above the low bar for online fan fiction and I could see Battlefront III really wowing fans. I mean, I'm glad Battlefront II players have managed to stick around, but there definitely was a lot about the game I would personally like to see done better next time around.

With all that potential, I could easily see some future Star Wars Battlefront III project blasting its way onto our best PS5 games list. In the meantime, at least there's a sizeable community of Battlefront II players to play with on PS4 — if that's your thing, at any rate. Would you play a Star Wars Battlefront III?
