PS5 MOBA Smite 2 and its platinum trophy are going free-to-play Publisher Hi-Rez Studios has announced that Smite 2 is going free-to-play in just under a week, adding another free-to-play PS5 platinum to the roster.Jamie Sharp Published 08 Jan 2025 FollowtopicsSMITE 2Hi-Rez StudiosPlayStation 5PlayStation 4Jamie Sharp After a few months of paid early access, Smite 2's free-to-play beta release is slated for next week. While grabbing all of those Smite 2 trophies is going to be far from easy, at least they lead to a full free platinum trophy. The first game has a hardcore fanbase, and the sequel could well end up being added to our list of the best free PS5 games. Smite 2's free-to-play platinum is the start of a new era for the gameSmite 2 was initially released in early access on PS5 in August 2024Fans previously had to purchase one of three Founder's Packs to playOnce the game goes free-to-play, a lot more PS5 players could hop inThe original Smite is a third-person MOBA that's amassed a large, dedicated fanbase with a massive roster of playable gods and crossover characters. Smite 2 builds upon the foundations of the first game and makes for a much smoother experience across consoles and PC, but it's been locked behind Founder's Packs for a minimum cost of $29.99/£24.99 during its early access period that began in August 2024. That's all about to change, though, as Smite 2 is moving to a free-to-play beta on Tuesday, January 14, 2025. This will finally add the game's platinum trophy to the growing list of free ones released recently, including Infinity Nikki, Wuthering Waves and AAA Dynamic Scenes. While a free-to-play launch this early in the year might seem unorthodox, Marvel Rivals has proven that releasing free multiplayer titles packed with playable characters during usually quiet periods for releases can lead to success. At the time of writing, Smite 2's platinum has been unlocked by 0.1% of players. Checking through the game's trophy list, it's not hard to see why. One trophy, in particular, that stands out is 'Last God Standing,' which requires you to be the last god alive on the map during a match. I don't see how you'd achieve this without a party of players working to help you on both your team and the opposing one. Other trophies such as 'Minion Dominator' are mere grinds, requiring 5,000 Minion kills — An easy feat for anyone who has played a few matches in a MOBA before. There are already 45 playable gods in the game to help you unlock this and every other trophy, and the free-to-play launch will add five more. On January 14, 2025, players will see four gods from the original Smite, Agni, Mulan, Ullr, and Geb, make the jump to Smite 2. Aladdin, the thief of legend, is a brand new god who will also join the roster on free-to-play release day. Aladdin isn't all that's new. In addition to Role Guides to help newcomers master the best ways to play is a new game mode, Joust. It's a 3v3 mode with just one lane down, in which teams fight for supremacy, and it sounds incredibly chaotic. Developer Titan Forge Games has also seen fit to add a 1v1 Duel mode that makes for a much more intimate and undoubtedly close-quarters battle between gods and minions. With new gods set to join Smite 2 in the future and a much more accessible price point, the title could be on our list of the best PS5 multiplayer games before too long. Will you be jumping into it when it becomes freely available next week? Let us know if you are and if you'll be hunting for the platinum in the comments.
