PS5 owners who haven't had the chance to earn those Ratchet and Clank trophies on PS4 have had an excellent incentive to check the game out, thanks to a new update from Insomniac Games. The free Ratchet and Clank 2016 PS5 upgrade patch allowed players to enjoy one of the best PS4 games around at a stable 60 frames per second, and now the new DLC update bestows Ratchet with The Bouncer for free.

Update: Our initial report suggested that the PS5 upgrade for Ratchet and Clank was a new update. This was actually released for the game back in 2021 — we've since amended the article.

Ratchet and Clank (2016) gets free DLC on PS5 and PS4

Insomniac Games re-announced the Ratchet and Clank PS5 upgrade in a post on X alongside news that some previously exclusive DLC would be made free for everyone. For both PS5 and PS4 players, the update allows owners of the Ratchet and Clank reboot from 2016 to add "The Bouncer" (from the original Ratchet and Clank on PS2) to their in-game arsenal. The weapon was originally available as a pre-order bonus but is finally available for all players.

This free piece of DLC content follows a 2021 update allows Ratchet and Clank 2016 to run at a smooth 60fps on PS5, addressing one of the few major criticisms of the game's initial PS4 release. To be clear, this frame rate improvement is available in the PS4 version of the game — there is no new, separate PS5 version of Ratchet and Clank. The patch allows the game to run at 60fps on PS5 in the same way we've seen similar patches work for the PS4 versions of The Last of Us Part II and God of War.

That means, sadly, that there still remains no new Ratchet and Clank PS5 platinum trophy to unlock. That's a shame for trophy hunters who have already experienced the game, like myself, as a new trophy would definitely incentivize players like me to dive back into a playthrough of the 2016 reboot. Still, let's not look a gift horse in the mouth — getting to play Ratchet and Clank 2016 at 60fps with The Bouncer DLC finally unlocked is still a tremendous treat.

If you haven't played the Ratchet and Clank PS5 reboot before, it's genuinely a stellar action game with some stunning visuals that really maxed out what the PS4 was capable of. The only drawback of the game having such gorgeous graphics on PS4 was that Insomniac Games had to prioritize the look of the game over its performance. The previous free PS5 patch righted that wrong, leaving players who experience the game now on PS5 with an ideal version of the game.

If you don't own a copy of the PS4 game already, you can access Ratchet and Clank 2016 via PS Plus Extra's Game Catalog as well. It is easily one of the best PS Plus games on the service, and now with all its content unlocked, it's truly a tremendous get for Sony's subscription library. Let us know in the comments whether you'll be checking out the free PS4 and PS5 content for Ratchet and Clank in the near future.
