There are plenty more players collecting Modern Warfare 3 trophies on PS5 and PS4 this week as our chart for the PS5 top 40 shows Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3's Season 3 bringing a huge new wave of players to the game. Meanwhile, Dragon's Dogma 2 and even one of the best PS5 multiplayer games around, Helldivers 2, have all seen a dip in their PS5 player count.

Modern Warfare 3 sale and new season bring 10% PS5 player spike

If you were to glance over this week's PlayStation Chart (data courtesy of GameInsights), it might not look like much has changed in terms of gaming habits from our sample of 3.1 million PS5 and PS4 players. However, behind the scenes, there's been a massive increase in players for one PlayStation game and a lot of player count drops for the others.
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 and Call of Duty Warzone both saw an influx of new content thanks to the launch of Season 3 on Wednesday, April 3, 2024. This new season also came hand-in-hand with an exclusive PS Store discount for Modern Warfare 3 (which contains Warzone). The result is that across Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, 3, and Warzone, the live-service shooter saw an influx of 10% more PS5 and PS4 players.

Call of Duty wasn't the only winner from this past week, as we also saw the launch of the three new monthly PlayStation Plus April 2024 games. As expected, Immortals of Aveum took the lead position, although you might be surprised to see Skul The Hero Slayer outranking the might of the Minecraft franchise name. It seems Minecraft spin-offs really do not have it easy convincing people to play them.
As for the rest of the chart, unfortunately there's been a lot of player count drops — likely fuelled by a dip in new games (for the first time this year) and by more players rushing back to Call of Duty to keep up with the latest season. The two games hit the hardest were Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, which dropped 17.4% of its PS5 player count, and Dragon's Dogma 2, which dropped 16.43% of its PS5 player count.

Helldivers 2 also saw a 4.6% player count dip this week, which isn't so bad for a game that's directly competing with Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3. It certainly fared better than Fortnite, which dropped 8.87% of its player count last week. I would imagine that's because a fair chunk of its player base jump back and forth between it and Call of Duty.
Lastly, pour one out for Rise of the Ronin, which never quite saw the charts success it deserved and is now firmly losing players with a 12.94% player decrease this week. That's a shame — as I said in my Rise of the Ronin platinum trophy tips, I do think there's a lot in this game that players will really enjoy if they gave it a chance. That said, to the victor the spoils — Dragon's Dogma 2 was definitely the big PS5 game to play this last month!

Chart compiled using gameplay data from over 3.1 million active PlayStation accounts (not just TrueTrophies accounts). Chart information is copyright GameInsights. Regarding this data:
  • When an account opens a game, this is registered as a game being played. Accounts can only register a game once per week.
  • Our data is good for suggesting general trends — we represent this using percentages, not numbers.
