Sony's PS Plus Season of Play announcement offered eager subscribers cool benefits such as exclusive avatars and a chance to play games online with a free multiplayer weekend. However, one thing that the company neglected to mention was a recently uncovered PS Plus Season of Play competition offering the chance to win a free PS5 Slim and 12 months access to some of the best PS Plus Premium games around.

The PS Plus Season of Play competition for December 2023 was revealed in a PlayStation Blog post exclusively for Southeast Asia — however, to be clear, this isn't just limited to countries in Asia. The competition starts on Tuesday, December 19, 2023, and concludes on Friday, January 5, 2024, requiring players to simply answer five questions on Sony's PS Plus website in order to be eligible for the prize.

The full list of regions eligible for the contest can be seen on the website, but most of the main players you would expect to make the cut are there: the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Mexico, UAE, Ireland, Luxembourg, and so on. Why Sony then excluded mention of the competition from the Western Season on Play announcement is beyond us.

This is the second time Sony has taken some strange actions during this event after the PS Plus Season of Play PlayStation Stars campaign was revealed to be just the same regular PS Plus campaign players get every month. However, perhaps a clue as to why Sony has restricted any mention of the competition in the West can be guessed at by looking at the prize itself.
The competition's winner(s) not only have the chance to take home a digital PS5 Slim, but also a 12-month PS Plus subscription. However, that 12-month subscription is for PS Plus Deluxe — a tier that replaces PS Plus Premium in certain regions. The key difference between a Deluxe subscription and a Premium subscription is that Deluxe subscribers can't access PlayStation cloud gaming, and so can't stream PS5, PS4, or PS3 games from the Classics Catalog.

It's possible that while players in the above countries might enter, the region of their PSN account might prove incompatible with the PS Plus Deluxe prize. So, to avoid headaches, the PS Plus State of Play competition was broadcast only to eager players in Southeast Asia. Still, now that you know, there's no harm in trying to enter the competition once December 19, 2023 rolls around. After all, unlike PS Plus Deluxe, that PS5 Slim prize won't care which region you're from at all.

It's a shame that winners won't be able to access the PlayStation Plus PC app with their Deluxe membership, but that's still quite the prize! Will you be entering the competition and trying to take home a free PS5 Slim? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
