The PS Plus Extra and Premium September 2024 games have been announced, and if you're a big fan of PS2 games on PS5, then you're going to love this month's lineup. PS Plus Premium is getting two PS2 games for September 2024Mister Mosquito and SkyGunner — and since both games were published by Sony, hopes are high for PS5 trophy support!

PS2 games Mister Mosquito and SkyGunner are coming to PS5 and PS4

  • PS Plus Premium will add PS2 games Mister Mosquito and SkyGunner on Tuesday, September 17, 2024
  • Both games were originally published by Sony, and so should receive platnum trophy support at launch
  • Mister Mosquito and SkyGunner should also be available to purchase separately on PS5 and PS4
Alongside the much-anticipated PSP game Secret Agent Clank, PS Plus Premium is set to add two PS2 games to the Classics Catalog this month: Mister Mosquito and SkyGunner. If you've never heard of them, that's not too surprising — both titles are pretty obscure Sony-published games from the PS2's earlier years.

PS2 games PS PlusTwo Sony PS2 games!

I'll go into a little detail about both games below, but there are two things you'll want to know. First, we expect both Mister Mosquito and SkyGunner to get platinum trophy support on PS5 and PS4. There hasn't been a single Sony-published PS Plus Premium game released in 2024 without trophy support, so it looks like good odds that both of these PS2 games will have platinum trophies to unlock.

Second, you'll be able to get your hands on both Mister Mosquito and SkyGunner on Tuesday, September 17, 2024. PS Plus Premium subscribers will gain access to both PS2 games as part of their subscription at launch, but you should be able to purchase both games separately on PS5 and PS4 via the PS Store.

Now, let's take a look at both of these obscure Sony-published PS2 games!

Mister Mosquito

  • PS2 release date: June 25, 2002 (NA)
  • Developer: Zoom
  • What's it about? Being a little mosquito bot and causing havoc
Hot on the heels of his surprise Astro Bot cameo, PS5 and PS4 players will finally get a chance to meet Mister Mosquito and his bizarre PS2 game. In Mister Mosquito (AKA Mr Moskeeto in PAL regions), you play as a robotic mosquito tasked with sucking the blood of the Yamada family to fill up little blood tanks.

Each stage of the game typically involves trying to get close enough to one member of the Yamada family to suck their blood without ending up in a fight (in which they chase you around the room and slap you) or getting swatted to death. To do so, you'll need to time your bloodsucking well, keep the Yamada family distracted, and try not to get killed by other obstacles like pesticides and air conditioners.

It's a pure example of how weird and creative PS2 games (and especially Japanese PS2 games) could be back in the day. You might need a guide to get a handle on the controls though — Mister Mosquito does not do a great job of explaining what you're supposed to do in the early game. Once you're over that hurdle, though, you can enjoy this hilarious, bizarre PS2 adventure!

SkyGunner

  • PS2 release date: March 13, 2002 (NA)
  • Developer: PixelArts
  • What's it about? Joining a gang of pilots and stopping an evil madman
In many ways, SkyGunner is an even more obscure Sony-published PS2 game than Mister Mosquito, largely because it didn't even get a release in the PAL region! That's a shame, as there's a lot to love in this flight combat game, particularly in terms of its beautiful art direction and bombastic set pieces.

In SkyGunner, you play alternately as three pilots — Femme, Ciel, and Copain — who have been tasked with stopping the various evil plans of Ventre, an eccentric genius. While initially there is a plot about Ventre stealing a perpetual motion machine called the Eternal Engine, the game's story quickly becomes more episodic, with Ventre presenting a new evil scheme each mission, and the pilots showing up to stop it.

Much like Mister Mosquito, SkyGunner's controls can be a little tricky. It's an ambitious PS2 game that allows you to fly around freely, but also asks you to minutely navigate various objectives and enemy formations in the open air. Still, it's got a fun cast, the presentation is stunning — they just don't make bright skylines like they did in the PS2 era — and the flight combat gets pretty fun once you get the hang of it!

Here's hoping both Mister Mosquito and SkyGunner come with platinum trophies to unlock on PS5 and PS4 — then we can easily slot both titles on our list of the best PS Plus Premium games. Have you played either of these obscure Sony PS2 games before? Let us know down in the comments!
