Why you should play The Last of Us Part I on PS Plus Extra

  • The Last of Us Part I is available via PS Plus Extra as of Thursday, September 26, 2024
  • This PS5-only game is a massive graphical overhaul of Naughty Dog's The Last of Us
  • The Last of Us Part I brings nicer graphics and an easy trophy list to this PS3 classic
Sony revealed during its State of Play September 2024 showcase that PS Plus Extra would add The Last of Us Part I on Thursday, September 26, 2024. Well, now that the game is available in the Games Catalog, I'm going to go out on a limb here and say you really should play this PS5 console exclusive with your subscription.
However, if you're still debating whether or not to check out this PS5 remaster, then you should check out the three reasons why I think The Last of Us Part I is definitely worth your time. Even if you've played The Last of Us on PS3 or PS4 before, you shouldn't rule out a replay of this major PS5 re-release!

Check out the three reasons to play The Last of Us Part I on PS Plus Extra below.

1. PS Plus solves The Last of Us Part I's big "cash grab" problem

Back in 2022, at the launch of The Last of Us Part I, there was one recurring criticism that clung to this PS5 remaster: "cash grab." Regardless of how well made the game was, Sony struggled to justify to players why it was necessary to purchase The Last of Us for a third time in less than 10 years.

The Last of Us Part I

It certainly didn't help that The Last of Us Part I launched with a $70 price tag and still frequently sells for that price on the PS Store. Slice it any way you like, there's just not a lot substantially new about this release to justify paying that price when you can get the excellent PS4 release The Last of Us Remastered for a few cents on sale.

However, The Last of Us Part I's arrival on PS Plus Extra offers the perfect solution to this criticism by making it considerably cheaper to check this new version out. A month of PS Plus Extra costs $14.99 / £10.99 / 13,99€ — a price that seems pretty reasonable to me to gain access to this 15-hour-long game for a month.

While it hardly addresses The Last of Us Part I's staggering default retail price, it at least lets interested PS5 players finally get their hands on this remaster without having to break the bank.

2. The Last of Us Part I's platinum trophy is way easier to unlock

Trophy hunters need to know that The Last of Us Part I is nowhere near as challenging a game to platinum as the original PS3 release or the earlier PS4 remaster. The PS5 version comes with a greatly altered trophy list that takes out the worst offenders preventing fans from picking up those first two platinum trophies.

Sure, you've got some tricky trophies here. You're still going to have to hunt down all the Firefly pendants, optional conversations, comic books, locked doors, notes, safes, artifacts, and training manuals. That's a lot of pace-ruining collectibles that need tracking down!

Still, the removal of The Last of Us' tedious multiplayer trophies not only helps make Part I's trophy list an evergreen platinum that will stand the test of time, but also removes its biggest time sink from the game.

Plus, you no longer have to beat the story on harder difficulties — just one playthrough on the difficulty of your choice will suffice! The original release also required you to play the story again in New Game+ mode, which has also been removed from The Last of Us Part I's trophy list.

The Last of Us Part I

The only new core additions to The Last of Us Part I's trophy list involves finding cute little asides in the Left Behind bonus chapter of the game, which you now also need to beat. Saying that, it's a light and enjoyable prequel story that you're going to want to play anyway, so it's hardly going to stop you from taking home the platinum!

3. Naughty Dog didn't mess with its PS3 success

Easy trophies and a more affordable price point are all well and good, but I think ultimately the biggest reason you should check out The Last of Us Part I on PS Plus Extra is because it's just really, really good.

Where remasters can often mess with the original look or feel of the original game, The Last of Us Part I impressed me immensely back in 2022 with how much thought and care Naughty Dog had put into updating the game for PS5.
Despite its beautiful new graphics, this is still The Last of Us you know and love, and that's exactly what I want when I'm replaying a game I already think the world of.

It would have been very easy for Sony to demand The Last of Us Part I play like its sequel, Part II, by giving Joel and Ellie new movement abilities and slicker weapons. However, such a dramatic change would break the flow of the original game's immaculate level design and make it feel like we're playing a modified fan-made version of The Last of Us.

Instead, The Last of Us Part I feels like a fancy "Special Edition 4K re-release" of the PS3 game. If you've already played the game before, this might sound like something you can live without, and you'd be right.

The Last of Us Part I

That said, as someone who played and loved the original, I found myself falling in love all over again thanks to the care and attention Naughty Dog paid while enhancing the game's overall presentation.

Having such a quality PS5 release in the Game Catalog is just icing on the cake. So, if you have played The Last of Us before, I think you should take this chance to remind yourself why it's one of the best games ever made. Meanwhile, if you haven't played this game in any form before, you owe it to yourself to check out The Last of Us Part I on PS Plus Extra.

If you need any more convincing, my The Last of Us Part I review goes into some absurd detail on why this PS5 remaster is absolutely worth your time. In the meantime, will you be checking out The Last of Us Part I on PS Plus Extra? Let us know down in the comments below.
