The PS Plus Extra and Premium September 2024 games lineup seems to have drawn in quite the crowd, largely thanks to the addition of day-one game The Plucky Squire to PS Plus Extra's Game Catalog. There's a 12.7% uptick in player interest giving the PS Plus Extra and Premium player count for September 2024 a much-needed boost after a disappointing August.
The Plucky Squire helps PS Plus Extra bounce back in September 2024
- PS Plus Extra and Premium games for September 2024 saw 12.7% more players than August 2024's lineup
- The biggest PS Plus Extra game for the month was day-one PS5 launch title The Plucky Squire
- PS Plus Premium's biggest game for the month was PS2 curio Mister Mosquito
Using a gameplay data sample from over 3.1 million active PSN accounts (courtesy of our partnership with GameInsights, which draws the majority of its PSN data from sources beyond TrueTrophies), we track the debut player count of every PS5 and PS4 game that comes to PS Plus Extra and Premium.
This includes September 2024's PS Plus Extra and Premium games, which have seen a 12.7% player count increase compared to the August 2024 lineup. That'll be good news for Sony, especially seeing as September's lineup has reversed the downward trend in subscriber interest that started with July 2024's disappointing player count.
The Plucky Squire's PS Plus player count did most of the heavy lifting this month, as you can see from the ranking of September's games below. The day-one PS5 launch title was nearly 70% more popular than the next best-performing PS Plus Extra or Premium game, which was the open-world survival game Chernobylite.

#11 — Ben 10 (PS Plus Extra) [98% less]
#12 — Pistol Whip (PS Plus Premium) [Did not rank]
Note: Percentage shows debut player count in relation to #1 game, which in this case is The Plucky Squire. Pistol Whip did not rank in the top 500 most-played PS5 and PS4 games this week, meaning its player count falls outside of our tracked range.
Meanwhile, PS Plus Premium scored a modest success with the release of wacky PS2 game Mister Mosquito (AKA Mr Moskeeto). It's the 14th biggest PS Plus Premium game this year, beating out Ratchet and Clank PSP spin-off Secret Agent Clank and obscure PS2 title SkyGunner.
Unfortunately, SkyGunner now ranks as the worst-performing PS2 game added to PS Plus Premium so far, having pulled in 35.9% less subscribers than the previous worst-performing PS2 game, Summoner. In fairness, both games are pretty deep pulls from the PS2's historic library, so it's not too surprising to see both largely getting ignored.
Speaking of getting ignored, Pistol Whip is now the fourth PSVR2 game to fail to make the top 500 most-played PS5 and PS4 games during its PS Plus Premium debut. It joins Before Your Eyes, The Walking Dead Saints and Sinners Chapter 2, and Vacation Simulator, all of which have failed to entice subscribers into firing up their PSVR2 headsets to check them out.

#8 — January 2024 (Top game: Tiny Tina's Wonderlands)
#9 — February 2024 (Top game: Need for Speed Unbound)With the help of The Plucky Squire, September 2024 has proven to be the third-best performing month for PS Plus Extra and Premium this year. Sony's strategy in bringing another day-one game to PS Plus Extra has worked like a charm, although it seems safe to say that had The Plucky Squire not been here, we would be looking at a very underwhelming player count here.
It's serves to remind us once again that the company should really consider securing monthly PS Plus Extra day-one games. The Plucky Squire joins Dave the Diver, Animal Well, and Tales of Kenzera Zau as one of the best-performing PS Plus games of 2024, and we'd love to see more like it before the year is out.
This latest day-one launch title will no doubt find itself on our best PS Plus games list soon as well thanks to its delightful adventure game charms!
