12. September 2023

  • Monthly Games: Saints Row, Black Desert, and Generation Zero
  • Average Score: 2.26
September 2023 was voted the worst month of PS Plus Essential monthly games. People took issue with Saints Row being the lead game, with the open-world game having seriously damaged the reputation of the series on launch by being buggy, bloated, and (unforgivably) boring. With Generation Zero, an FPS with a remarkably poor critical reception, and Black Desert, an incredibly niche MMO, September 2023's selection was always going to be a shoo-in for the worst PS Plus monthly games of the year.

11. August 2023

  • Monthly Games: PGA Tour 2K23, Dreams, and Death’s Door
  • Average Score: 2.31
August 2023 is a lesson in exactly how to wind up players looking for a PS Plus game to play every month. No one likes sports games being included, let alone one about golf. Hole in one? More like straight into the water hazard. Then we have Dreams, a great game designed for a specific creative audience with no pull for the general consumer. Sorry, Media Molecule. Then, to cap it off, you have the decent indie souls-like Death's Door. It doesn't scream "for everyone," does it?

10. May 2023

  • Monthly Games: Chivalry 2, Grid Legends, and Descenders
  • Average Score: 2.43
I'm a little gutted at May 2023 being ranked so low, but I understand it. Chivalry 2, as marvelously chaotic as its medieval warfare is, is online and a bit hard to grasp. Grid Legends is a remarkably average racer. Descenders is another indie that is great fun, but just isn't everyone's cup of tea. So, that leaves it with a poor rating, and most people unhappy with the triplet of games.

NBA 2K23

9. June 2023

  • Monthly Games: NBA 2K23, Trek to Yomi, and Jurassic World Evoloution 2
  • Average Score: 2.65
Another below-average lineup in June 2023. PS Plus just isn't the place for sports games, is it? NBA 2K23 is a strong sports game, but general players just don't want any part of it. Then you have Trek to Yomi, a black and white platformer set in Japan. I quite like it, but I also know that it's a little pretentious, difficult, and not for everyone. Certainly, the community rating proves that. I have a feeling the Jurassic World Evolution 2 community was perfectly content, though. Dinosaurs always satisfy.

8. November 2023

  • Monthly Games: Mafia II Definitive Edition, Aliens Fireteam Elite, Dragon Ball The Breakers
  • Average Score: 2.69
If there was ever a lineup designed to make you shrug your shoulders, it was November 2023's lineup. Gangster game Mafia II is certainly no bad offering as a secondary title, but it isn't exactly lead game material, is it? Aliens Fireteam Elite is a perfectly fine co-op shooter that gets frighteningly hard, but makes up for being slightly poor in quality by offering the jankiest kind of co-op fun. Then we have Dragon Ball The Breakers. I don't understand anime. Make what you will with that one.

7. December 2023

  • Monthly Games: Powerwash Simulator, Sable, and Lego 2K Drive
  • Average Score: 2.93
We are nearly (nearly) into what we would call an "Average" rating with December 2023's games. Powerwash Simulator is a really strong indie game with plenty of popular appeal, but its strength is counterbalanced by the weakest PS Plus indie debut of 2023, Sable. It's a fine game — as is Lego 2K Drive. You can't get excited about it, but you also can't dismiss it. It's Lego and there are cars. Cool. Next!

6. March 2023

  • Monthly Games: Battlefield 2042, Code Vein, and Minecraft Dungeons
  • Average Score: 2.97
This might be the most harshly treated lineup on our list, even though it is sitting at sixth. It is still rated as below average, but I think this is a bit of a low-key banger. I still don't understand anime so Code Vein is beyond my intellectual capacity, but Battlefield 2042 on PS Plus... oh boy. It broke records when it hit the service with a 500% player boom. It might not have revived the much-hated effort from EA, but it at least was a turning point back to mediocrity for the series. Minecraft Dungeons is maybe the most PS Plus game of PS Plus games and performed well too. Underserved by your votes, March 2023!

5. April 2023

  • Monthly Games: Meet Your Maker, Tails of Iron, and Sackboy A Big Adventure
  • Average Score: 3.25
Here is a month we weren't expecting to rank so high! April 2023 gave us Sackboy A Big Adventure though, which is one of the most beloved games of the year. It's a great platformer that is criminally underrated. Tails of Iron is a hardy rat fantasy game that I love, though I know a few of you on this site are less fond of it. The death trap-building fun of Meet Your Maker never quite hit the heights we thought it might, but it was a novel day-one addition to PS Plus, for sure. A strong first above-average month for PS Plus Essential.

4. February 2023

  • Monthly Games: OlliOlli World, Mafia Definitive Edition, Evil Dead The Game, and Destiny 2 Beyond Light
  • Average Score: 3.36
February 2023 was a killer thanks to one simple reason: four games. Nice, Sony. OlliOlli World could be placed amongst the best PS Plus games of the year; so good is that rad skating game. Having the first Mafia game as a secondary inclusion is a great inclusion. Plus, Evil Dead The Game has a hardy fan base even though it is online (and thus, usually unfavoured amongst voters). Plus, a Destiny 2 expansion is a bonus just for laughs. Sure, why not?

3. January 2023

  • Monthly Games: Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order, Fallout 76, and Axiom Verge 2
  • Average Score: 3.37
If there was the perfect example of one game carrying a month, it'd be January 2023's selection. Live-service game Fallout 76 is purportedly fine now. Axiom Verge 2 isn't quite as loved as the first game, but it's still gorgeous, hard, and a laugh for its niche audience. Then there's Star Wars. I don't think I need to type more words to explain what's going on with Jedi Fallen Order — the people love it.

2. October 2023

  • Monthly Games: The Callisto Protocol, Framing Simulator 22, and Weird West
  • Average Score: 3.44
A cheeky second place for October 2023 in what I think is a bit of an overrating of the month, but hey, I'm no dictator. TrueTrophies is a democracy and I hear your voices loud and clear. You think that The Calisto Protocol was a good inclusion. Do you know what? You are persuading me.

A horror game that disappointed on launch but gets to find fans through a service like PS Plus is a good story. Farming Simulator 22 has its hardy fans who I'm sure were delighted to see it. Weird West is a really fun and odd game. A funny old month to take second, but upsets at the polls are good fun!

1. July 2023

  • Monthly Games: Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War, Alan Wake Remastered, and Endling
  • Average Score: 3.74
July 2023 was voted the best month of PS Plus Essential monthly games. Is it a shock? I mean this is truly a quality month. It's great to see a small game like Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War get the credit it finally deserves. Nice one Activision Blizzard, we hope this helps you fund your next artful, inspired entry in this series!

Alan Wake Remastered was a perfectly timed addition ahead of the sequel and I think a lot of people found the joy of the series through PS Plus this year. Finally, the behemoth that is Endling has all the good stuff. Foxes. Life. Death. Everything in between. Simply wonderful. What a month July 2023 was!

So, those are all the PS Plus Essential monthly games ranked, make sure to also check out our PS Plus year one review. What do you think of the ranking? Are any months underserved? Let us know in the comments and I'll see you down there!
