With the chance of bagging a digital RX-78-2 Gundam on the line, it's no wonder PlayStation Stars has bumped up Mobile Suit Gundam Battle Operation 2's PS5 player count.PS Stars reward doubles online player count for live-service shooterThe PlayStation Stars Gundam collectible went live alongside a pretty simple campaign via the PS App on Thursday, November 30, 2023. To unlock the RX-78-2 Gundam collectible, PS Stars subscribers simply need to boot up a round of Mobile Suit Gundam Battle Operation 2 on either PS5 or PS4 before the deadline of Thursday, December 28, 2023. Since then, thanks to our exclusive gameplay data from 3.2 million active PSN accounts (courtesy of our partnership with GameInsights), we've been able to see a huge spike in the active PS5 players checking out Battle Operation 2. In fact, week-on-week there's been a 134.95% increase in the number of PS5 players checking out Mobile Suit Gundam Battle Operation 2 (week ending Sunday, December 3, 2023), a massive jump for the anime shooter. As one of the many PS Stars subscribers who booted up the game for the first time last week to claim my very own Gundam reward, I can vouch for the effectiveness of this particular PS Stars campaign. I'm not often too swayed by the rewards offered by Sony's loyalty scheme — collecting them is usually incidental. The majority of collectibles I own are simply for owning older PlayStation hardware — something I could only undo with a time machine. The PS Stars collectible. However, looking over this cool Gundam reward, I couldn't help it — I felt the FOMO. I imagined a scenario in which PlayStation Stars someday becomes the foundation for some future PlayStation Home revival and on everyone's shelf but mine there rests a sweet Gundam figurine that I could have once owned. Why I would even be interested in playing PlayStation Home today I have no idea, but the thought had me checking out Battle Operation 2 for an hour at least. It helps that I had a morbid curiosity about the game itself. Mobile Suit Gundam Battle Operation 2 is a live-service third-person action game in which players duke it out in giant robots for loot boxes and other rewards. I found my experience playing it to be both baffling and a little dull as this simple action game beats you over the head with slow tutorials and, at least in my case, a lot of Japanese text.I can't say I'll be jumping back into my mech for another round of Battle Operation 2 any time soon, but I'm glad I picked up my Gundam collectible at least. Will you be picking up this cool PS Stars collectible as well?
