Paid platinum trophies run rampant in the latest PS Store sale While Sony put its foot down on paid platinum trophies on the PS Store, that hasn't stopped them from joining the new PlayStation Indies sale.Opinion by Sean Lawson Published 17 May 2024 FollowtopicsPlayStation 5PlayStation 4Sean Lawson We've discussed how paid platinums were banned from the PS Store back in 2022 due to Sony changing its publishing guidelines to stop the never-ending onslaught of spam games. However, despite all of this being put in place, paid platinum trophies are part of the latest PS Store sale. When you can put some of the best PS5 games on sale instead, it seems odd to promote something you are actively trying to get rid of.PlayStation Indies PS Store sale features multiple paid platinumsMy issue with paid platinums is that they have no spirit, no passion behind them. They are designed to profit off of people who love having lots of platinum trophies, reducing videogames to money and trophy lists. These platinums have no real worth compared to earning platinums in games like Tomb Raider, God of War, and The Last of Us. Those games all provide substance and take longer than a couple of minutes to earn. The paid platinum problem was a serious issue back in 2022. These games were coming in so thick and fast that they would wind up burying anything worth checking out on the PS Store. If you wanted to see what new games had just dropped, you would have to wade through hundreds — no joke — of paid platinums before you would even see a normal game. It made finding new games an absolute nightmare. It's the smaller developers whom I felt bad for. They likely depended on people browsing for new games that looked interesting, unique, and had a cheap price tag. Unfortunately, due to the assault on the eyes that the PS Store had become back then, it made rummaging through any new games a tedious slog, and many people (myself included) likely overlooked decent games. While things are definitely far better now on that front and you can explore the PS Store without having to see a bunch of spam games, I still find it odd that Sony would allow them to go on sale. Perhaps it doesn't go against Sony's new guidelines, but it certainly feels like it breaks the spirit of them by promoting these games to the masses. Why showcase these games that you actively acknowledge brought nothing but problems to the PS Store in the first place?Sony couldn't get rid of the paid platinums that were already on the PS Store before these new guidelines took effect. But, surely Sony can do something to keep them buried deep in the depths. Anyone who wants these types of games can still find them and those of us who hate them, never have to see them again. That would be the ideal outcome in my eyes.I do want to express there is a difference between paid platinums and easy platinums. We love easy platinums here at TrueTrophies. In fact, we have quite a few easy platinum trophy guides for you to browse. Just because something is easy, that doesn't make it bad. Easy platinum trophies can still provide compelling stories, engaging gameplay, and a solid experience all around. They provide more of an experience than simply pressing X hundreds of times and watching an image on the screen slightly bob up and down. Now, if you love these games, I don't want you to feel like you are being judged. You spend your money on whatever you like. However, I can't get over the sheer amount of games like this that were released back in the day and how they almost destroyed the PS Store. That's where my frustration with paid platinums stems from. What do you make of these paid platinums? Are you a fan? Despise them like me? Prefer to stick with easy platinums on PS Plus?
