As you might expect, I've had to make some absolutely brutal choices when paring this list down to just five recommendations. I still think people should check out games like Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 Remake and Clock Tower Rewind, but I just couldn't justify ranking them over these five games.

So, without further ado, check out the five PS4 games you should check out in October 2024 below.

Metaphor ReFantazio

From the key creative staff behind the beloved JRPG Persona 5 comes Metaphor ReFantazio — a whole new spin on Atlus' JRPG formula. The game is coming to PS5 and PS4 on Friday, October 11, 2024, and judging from the Metaphor ReFantazio demo's PS5 player count, it looks like it could be a massive hit with PlayStation players.

Set in the fantastical United Kingdom of Euchronia, you play as a member of a banished magical tribe who must unite the people in order to secure the throne from evildoers. Metaphor combines turn-based JRPG combat with real-time action in the overworld to deliver a wild mix of different styles and flavors, and it's great that PS4 players get to check this game out in October.

Unknown 9 Awakening

  • When available, you can find the Unknown 9 Awakening trophies here
  • PS4 Release Date: October 18, 2024
  • Perfect for: Fans of action adventure games looking for something new
A brand-new IP from Bandai Namco, Unknown 9 Awakening follows Haroona — a hero with the power to manipulate a power called The Fold, which she uses to take on a secret society out to use her powers for evil. It's a fun, mysterious premise from a new studio with eyes on a wider franchise, although that will obviously depend on whether Unknown 9 finds an audience.

From what we've seen, the visuals look delightful and the combat definitely seems intriguing. Unknown 9 seems to blend that well-trodden stealth-action combat bled we know from the Assassin's Creed games, although the ability to possess enemies and have them beat each other up definitely adds an intriguing wrinkle. Here's hoping this one turns out well on PS4!

Sonic x Shadow Generations

Sonic Generations, one of the best Sonic games, is back on PS5 and PS4 with a significant performance upgrade over the original PS3 release. However, this isn't just your standard re-release — instead, Sonic Team has doubled the game's length by adding a whole secondary game mode starring Shadow the Hedgehog.

Sonic x Shadow Generations features new stages pulled from games like Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic Forces, and Sonic Frontiers, and a whole new hub area full of activities for Shadow the Hedgehog to complete. It looks like a dream come true for a big Sonic fan like myself, so I can't wait to check this one out.

Call of Duty Black Ops 6

That's right, Call of Duty games are still releasing on PS4! So, while it might lack the performance power of the bigger PS5 release, fans of the series should still definitely check out the next entry in the Black Ops series on PS4. With a reworked movement system and the return of Prestige in multiplayer, it could be the shake up this franchise has sorely needed.

All the multiplayer modes you expect are back, plus Call of Duty Zombies will continue to be a star feature of the Black Ops series. This time, the plot sees the CIA infiltrated by a shady organization during the Gulf War era of US politics. So, obviously you're going to figure out who's behind it and gun them down. Look, nobody said the plot of these games had to be deep to be entertaining.

Ys X Nordics

  • When available, you can find the Ys X Nordics trophies here
  • PS4 Release Date: October 25, 2024
  • Perfect for: Action RPG fans that love massive adventures
Following on from the well-loved Ys VIII and Ys IX, Western players can finally get their hands of Ys X Nordics in October 2024. This time, instead of managing a whole party fully of characters, you're down to two: heroes Adol and Karja. This will give you more control of the chaotic action this series is known for.

This entry's nautical theme introduces full ship combat, mixing up the usual RPG battles against monsters and creatures of all kinds. Ys X also has a simple plot about Adol and Karja attempting to sever the magical connection placed upon them by their chance encounter. It looks like the perfect entry point for new fans, so definitely check it out on PS4!

Those are my top picks for PS4 games launching in October 2024! There are also a ton of exciting upcoming PS5 games this month too, including Dragon Age The Veilguard and Silent Hill 2, so keep your eyes peeled if you have Sony's current console! Will you be playing any new PS4 games this month? Let us know in the comments below.
