It would seem many of you have started earning those MultiVersus trophies and then swiftly ducked back out before claiming the platinum. The recent MultiVersus PS5 and PS4 player count decline is a telling sign that the hype for the game has already started to die off. However, we still think it's one of the better free-to-play PS5 games out there.

MultiVersus sees a huge drop in its PS5 and PS4 player count just one month later

  • MultiVersus has lost 70% of its player base in just one month
  • MultiVersus is a free-to-play PS5 and PS4 game
  • MultiVersus had an all-time high player count on Sunday, June 3, 2024
With our sample for 3.1 million active PSN accounts (courtesy of GameInsights), we can tell you that since the MultiVersus' relaunch last month, the free-to-play fighter has seen a huge decrease in its player base, with over 70% of its players dropping the game.
MultiVersus was re-released onto PS5 and PS4 on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, after being pulled from the PS Store front for over a year. The game was pulled due to it not performing as Warner Bros. had intended. This clearly worked for a brief period as MultiVersus saw a peak in its player count on week ending Sunday, June 3, 2024.

However, this high wouldn't last long as only one month later MultiVersus has lost 70% of its player base. This is likely due to the hype slowly dying down and the game naturally setting into its actual dedicated player base, something that happens with all new games.

On top of all of that, the game has received a lot of criticism due to the microtransactions that are littered throughout the game. There have also been many complaints about the game's lack of XP being granted from completing matches as well as accessibility options just seemingly being absent from the game. So, we can see why so many players decided to put the game down and never return.
The game has also recently had some competition with the release of the free-to-play title Zenless Zone Zero, which comes from the developers of Genshin Impact. Zenless Zone Zero has debuted with a 42.71% lower player count than MultiVersus. Although, the game may see more attention in the long run as developer miHoYo has a very dedicated fanbase for its games.

While I doubt the lack of any new MultiVersus trophies is the reason many players have stopped playing the game, it was certainly a reason for me to never pick it up and play it. Let us know in the comments if you've stopped playing MultiVersus recently!

Chart compiled using gameplay data from over 3.1 million active PlayStation accounts (not just TrueTrophies accounts). Chart information is copyright GameInsights. Regarding this data:
  • When an account opens a game, this is registered as a game being played. Accounts can only register a game once per week.
  • Our data is good for suggesting general trends — we represent this using percentages, not numbers.
