Most popular PS5 games — Japan’s favorite PS5 game fails to chart

In Japan, one of the most popular PS5 games for the week ending March 19, 2024, is the excellent RPG Unicorn Overlord. Shame the rest of the world can't agree.

While those Unicorn Overlord trophies couldn't be in hotter demand in Sony's home country, its performance across the world is another matter entirely. Our chart of the top 40 most popular PS5 games for the week ending March 17, 2024, shows Unicorn Overlord — one of the best PS5 JRPGs and strategy games to hit PS5 and PS4 in recent years — failing to make the cut entirely.

Unicorn Overlord can't crack most-played PS5 and PS4 games chart

With Unicorn Overlord launching for PS5 and PS4 on Friday, March 8, 2024, we've had to wait until the week ending Sunday, March 17, 2024, to get a full week's worth of active player data (courtesy of GameInsights) for the turn-based strategy JRPG.
The game has been performing so well in its native Japan that publisher Atlus has had to apologize for physical stock being unprepared to meet demand, so you might expect that success to translate to some PlayStation popularity. Well, unfortunately, Unicorn Overlord failed to make the top 40 most-played PS5 and PS4 games chart from last week, tapping out at the #55 spot.

That's by no means a disaster, but it's disappointing to see such a fascinatingly rich game fail to see the same level of feverish attention in the West as it does in the East. Known Japanese entities like Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Persona 3 Reload, Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth, and even Granblue Fantasy Relink have all graced the top 40 list at some point in 2024. Perhaps it was just wishful thinking on my part that Vanillaware's follow-up to the excellent 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim would see similar attention.
Elsewhere in this week's chart, we've got the debut of WWE 2K24 in the #33 spot. Last week's big PS Plus entries to the most popular PS5 games chart — namely Sifu and F1 23 — have continued to see attention, although Hello Neighbor 2 has swiftly dropped out of the top 40. Plus, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth has seen its first dip in player count since launch, while Helldivers 2 holds firm to the #3 spot.

For all the rest, check out the top 40 PlayStation Chart for the week ending March 17th, 2024.

Chart compiled using gameplay data from over 3.2 million active PlayStation accounts (not just TrueTrophies accounts). Chart information is copyright GameInsights. Regarding this data:
  • When an account opens a game, this is registered as a game being played. Accounts can only register a game once per week.
  • Our data is good for suggesting general trends — we represent this using percentages, not numbers.
