Harry Potter’s PS Plus debut outpaced by Astro Bot PS5 launch

This week's top 40 most popular PS5 games showcases two titles wrestling for your attention: PS Plus' Harry Potter Quidditch Champions vs Astro Bot.

In our exclusive list of the top 40 PS5 games this week, it's all about Harry Potter Quidditch Champions vs Astro Bot. Our PlayStation Chart, made using our representative sample of 3.1 million active PSN accounts (not just TrueTrophies accounts, courtesy of GameInsights), shows that the best PS5 platformer has the measure of Harry Potter's PS Plus debut!

Harry Potter Quidditch Champions less popular than Astro Bot on debut despite PS Plus

This might be one of the most interesting debut weeks we've had in 2024 as the PS Plus September 2024-fuelled Harry Potter Quidditch Champions has had to go up against PS5's smash hit platformer Astro Bot. Well, despite a three-day head start, the magical sports game just lost out as it finished as the tenth most popular PS5 game this week while Astro Bot finished as the eighth most popular.

The difference in PS5 player count from our sample was just 7%, making it a close race with Minecraft jammed between Astro Bot and Harry Potter Quidditch Champions in ninth. I think that that is an impressive finish for both games frankly. Harry Potter Quidditch Champions is a big IP, yes — but everyone was skeptical of the live-service spin-off.

For the sports game to find a tenth place in its first week makes me curious if it can maintain pace after its debut. However, Astro Bot has a different problem to contend with. As a single-player game that is quite short, normally it would die away quite quickly as players finish it. However, Team Asobi's game does seem to be finding viral success, which normally gives games a longer tail. Plus, this its ranking here is based on only two days of data.

Indeed, I think we're also seeing something unique here because just behind Astro Bot in 12th place is Astro's Playroom — the free PS5 game that comes with the console. Its popularity suggests that a lot of players are interested in Astro Bot but might not have picked up the full PS5 game yet and just want a taste of the world.

Of course, Astro's Playroom has been running a promotion with secret characters hidden in the game. That led to a massive PS5 player count boost in September 2024 last week, so the spike we're seeing this week could be an extension of that. In any case, Astro is dominating on PS5 right now and it's great to see!
