There was a mighty uptick in the number of PS5 and PS4 players hunting down those Ghost of Tsushima trophies lately, and it's all thanks to the reveal of one of the most exciting upcoming PS5 games of 2025. With so many players getting hyped for Ghost of Yotei, it's no wonder why Ghost of Tsushima saw a major State of Play player count boost this past week.
Ghost of Yotei reveal sends players rushing to play Ghost of Tsushima on PS5
- Ghost of Yotei, the sequel to Ghost of Tsushima, was revealed at Sony's State of Play showcase in September 2024
- That week, Ghost of Tsushima saw a combined 53% increase in active players across both the PS4 version and the PS5 Director's Cut
- Ghost of Yotei's release date has not been confirmed, but the game is set to launch sometime in 2025
Using a gameplay data sample from over 3.1 million active PSN accounts (courtesy of our partnership with GameInsights, which draws the majority of its PSN data from sources beyond TrueTrophies), we track the weekly player count of every popular PS5 and PS4 game.
That includes Ghost of Tsushima, which recently enjoyed a 53.7% PS5 and PS4 player count boost during the week in which Ghost of Yotei was revealed. Despite the sequel being set some 300 years after the events of Ghost of Tsushima, it seems Ghost of Yotei's trailer inspired players to check out Jin Sakai's story regardless.
Ghost of Tsushima has remained a consistently popular game on our PlayStation Chart — helped in part by the active multiplayer scene of Ghost of Tsushima Legends. Yet after all the PS5 games at the State of Play in September 2024 were revealed, the game jumped from #35 on the chart right up to the #26 spot.
This means that more people were playing Ghost of Tsushima and the game's PS5 Director's Cut last week than the newly-launched PS Plus Extra day-one game The Plucky Squire. It also puts the PlayStation Studios title's player count just 17.9% short of The Last of Us Part I, which enjoyed a very successful surprise launch on PS Plus Extra after the State of Play showcase.
While our data can't tell us why players were jumping into Ghost of Tsushima last week, we're sure it was for one of two reasons. Either they were returning players enjoying another breezy tour around Tsushima after getting inspired by Ghost of Yotei's trailer; or, they were newbies frantically catching up on the series before the new PS5 game comes out.
Either way, we're thrilled to see more players checking out this game — Ghost of Tsushima is one of the best PS4 games around and we're hopeful Ghost of Yotei will match it on PS5.
