Dynasty Warriors Origins’ PS5 debut falls shy of PlayStation Top 40

Dynasty Warriors Origins' solid PS5 player count makes it the biggest premium PlayStation game launch of 2025 so far, though it failed to make our Top 40 chart.

Those Dynasty Warriors Origins trophies are now out, and it seems plenty of PS5 players are checking out what looks to be one of the biggest and best PS5 games of 2025 so far. That said, it's very early days, and seeing as Dynasty Warriors Origins' PS5 player count wasn't high enough to score the game a spot on our Top 40 chart below, it might look like a smaller-scale release by year's end.

Dynasty Warriors Origins is 2025's biggest premium PS5 launch so far

  • Dynasty Warriors Origins was the 48th most-played PlayStation game in its debut week
  • So far, Origins is the most-played new premium PS5 or PS4 game launch of the year
  • However, the Dynasty Warriors prequel/spin-off did fall short of Wuthering Waves' PS5 launch player count
Using a gameplay data sample from over 3.4 million active PSN accounts (courtesy of our partnership with Game Lens, which draws most of its PSN data from sources beyond TrueTrophies), we track the debut player count of every PS5 and PS4 game to produce our weekly PlayStation Chart (which you can find at the bottom of this article).
Unfortunately, despite being the biggest premium PS5 or PS4 game release of the year so far, you won't find Dynasty Warriors Origins on that chart below. By the end of its launch week, this latest spin-off/prequel in the long-running Koei Tecmo series failed to crack the top 40, ultimately debuting at #48.

Despite some decent attention given to the PS5 Pro-enhanced Dynasty Warriors Origins demo, it seems the single-player game couldn't quite breakthrough the array of live-service games and PS Plus games crowding out this week's chart. Still, despite not making the Top 40, Dynasty Warriors Origins is still the most popular premium PS5 game for 2025 released so far.

Obviously, clearing the bar for that particular honor is pretty easy this early in the year. The only real premium competition in 2025 so far for Dynasty Warriors Origins to beat has come from Freedom Wars Remastered and Tales of Grace f Remastered, both of which Origins soundly beat with 627.92% and 477.11% more active PlayStation players respectively.
That said, were we to factor in free-to-play PS5 games released so far in 2025, Dynasty Warriors Origins would already have failed to match the popularity of Wuthering Waves. Three weeks after launch, Wuthering Waves is still floating around the Top 40 chart at #31, besting Dynasty Warriors Origins' player count by 23.4% even as its live-service audience starts to level off.

It's a shame that Dynasty Warriors Origins isn't getting a bit more attention, as it does seem to represent something of a refresh for the famous Musou series and its breezy action gameplay. Still, getting to claim your game is the biggest premium PS5 game launch of the year is a solid consolation prize — for however long that may be true, at least.

Chart compiled using gameplay data from over 3.4 million active PlayStation accounts (not just TrueTrophies accounts). Chart information is copyright Game Lens (formerly GameInsights). Regarding this data:
  • When an account opens a game, this is registered as a game being played. Accounts can only register a game once per week.
  • Our data is good for suggesting general trends — we represent this using percentages, not numbers.
