Whether you're into cooperative multiplayer experiences or love nothing more than to triumph over strangers in competitive game modes, at least one of the top 10 best PS5 multiplayer games is sure to be up your street. This list focuses on exploring the very best PS5 and PS4 games with online multiplayer modes, so you will require an active PS Plus subscription if you wish to experience them with friends.

The 10 best PS5 multiplayer games for online play — ranked

Before you jump in, it's worth noting that you won't find games like Fortnite or Fall Guys on this list, as we'll be focusing on premium PS5 multiplayer games here. We will have a separate list in the near future covering all of the best free-to-play multiplayer games available on PlayStation consoles, and we'll update this story with a link to that in the near future.

We're also specifically focusing on PS5 online multiplayer games with this list. If you're looking for the best local multiplayer PS5 games, we have a separate list for that too. We'll define throughout the list whether the multiplayer in each game is competitive or cooperative — that way you can stick to your preferred style of online play.

Here are the top 10 multiplayer PS5 games available to play online right now.

10. Dead by Daylight

  • Release Date: November 12, 2020
  • Developer: Behaviour Interactive
  • Multiplayer mode: Competitive, Cooperative
  • Is it on PS Plus? Yes; PS Plus Extra
With its addictive core gameplay loop and constantly updating roster — which sees the likes of Resident Evil's Albert Wesker and Nicholas Cage joining the hunt — you can understand why players keep coming back to Dead by Daylight. While many titles can offer a similar asymmetrical hunter vs hunted gameplay, they often lack the variety that keeps players coming back again and again to this one. Plus, if you're looking for an easy way to corral your friends together to collect Dead by Daylight trophies, you can still access this game handily with a couple of PS Plus Extra subscriptions, so check it out.

9. Final Fantasy XIV Endwalker

  • Release Date: December 7, 2021
  • Developer: Square Enix Creative Business Unit III
  • Multiplayer mode: Cooperative, Competitive
  • Is it on PS Plus? No
If you love the idea of working alongside or sparring with fellow players, but now and then you might enjoy just doing your own thing and hanging out in a world by yourself, then Final Fantasy XIV is definitely for you. The latest update, Endwalker, brought a ton of new jobs (now up to 20 options), a farming sim, new housing areas, and most importantly, new Final Fantasy XIV trophies.

You also might want to get a start on this one now, because the Final Fantasy XIV Dawntrail update will arrive pretty soon. Alongside new features and yet more world to discover, it's also hiding a Final Fantasy XVI crossover tease, so you'll want to start leveling up your character now just to catch that.

8. Armored Core VI Fires of Rubicon

  • Release Date: August 25, 2023
  • Developer: FromSoftware
  • Multiplayer mode: Competitive
  • Is it on PS Plus? No
Look, obviously this one's not going to be to everyone's tastes. If you dive into collecting Armored Core VI Fires of Rubicon trophies, you'll notice that this is a game mostly about piloting mechs and getting blown up countless times by an unassailable wall of rockets and laser beams. Still, if you do push through and find all the glorious design beneath that tough exterior, you'll also find thousands of crazy people who love it just as much as you do online, and they're all ready for a fight.

7. Gran Turismo 7

  • Release Date: March 4, 2022
  • Developer: Polyphony Digital
  • Multiplayer mode: Competitive
  • Is it on PS Plus? No
In case our glowing Gran Turismo 7 review didn't give it away, we think Polyphony Digital's latest exquisite car simulator is absolutely brilliant. Sure, those Gran Turismo 7 trophies can reach otherworldly levels of stinginess, but at the end of the day, you've got yourself a racer that has more love and attention poured into it than any other on the market. Plus, if you ever want to make yourself throw up while playing with your friends, try racing them with a PSVR2 headset on — it's quite the experience!

6. Elden Ring

  • Release Date: February 25, 2022
  • Developer: FromSoftware
  • Multiplayer mode: Competitive, Cooperative
  • Is it on PS Plus? No
Don’t let Elden Ring’s high platinum unlock rate fool you — this game is not for everyone. FromSoftware games are notoriously difficult even when played with friends, and if getting your head caved in by a tall dude on a horse one hundred times doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, you are well within your right to pass on collecting all those Elden Ring trophies.

If having your head cave in does sound like your cup of tea, then good news — Elden Ring is even better when played with friends. Working together to scrape through boss encounters, both with friends and strangers, can be just as challenging and just as rewarding as scraping through solo. Also, if you’re crazy, you can dip your toe into the PvP side of the game, have it promptly severed by a player rolling around like Sonic the Hedgehog, and then promptly pull whatever remains of your foot right the heck out.

5. Baldur's Gate III

  • Release Date: September 6, 2023
  • Developer: Larian Studios
  • Multiplayer mode: Cooperative
  • Is it on PS Plus? Trial version via PS Plus Premium
Alongside those truly delightful Baldur's Gate III trophies, this RPG comes with one of my absolute favorite features: local split-screen co-op that you can also take online to play with your friends. For that reason alone, you absolutely need to try this massive, critically acclaimed PS5 game. Though if you need another few reasons, perhaps Sean's Baldur's Gate III first impressions will convince you to check it out.

4. Street Fighter 6

  • Release Date: June 2, 2023
  • Developer: Capcom
  • Multiplayer mode: Competitive
  • Is it on PS Plus? No
While I don't want to say something reckless like "the new accessible Modern Controls will easily help you collect all the Street Fighters 6 trophies" or something like that, I do want to recommend actually trying this one online. That's not a recommendation I make for fighting games often — and trust me, those online Street Fighter players are definitely vicious animals — but this one has a strong ranking system and really does benefit from the new control scheme, so I heartily recommend it.

3. Remnant II

  • Release Date: July 25, 2023
  • Developer: Gunfire Games
  • Multiplayer mode: Cooperative
  • Is it on PS Plus? No
Remnant From the Ashes offered players a twisting, challenging new alternative to the Destiny formula for those who gave it a shot, but the title was always missing that little bit of polish. That's where Remnant II comes in, bringing a revised format and even more action that has absolutely delighted fans of the original. If you're looking for an intense new shooter to share with friends online, convince them to start collecting Remnant II trophies ASAP.

2. Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3

  • Release Date: November 10, 2023
  • Developer: Sledgehammer Games
  • Multiplayer mode: Competitive, Cooperative
  • Is it on PS Plus? No
While the third game in the Modern Warfare reboot series has little to talk about in terms of a campaign, it continues to shine when it comes to online multiplayer. Alongside the usual multiplayer refresh we're used to seeing from the series, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 also sees the return of Zombies, and this co-op survival mode is just as much fun as we remember it being. These games continue to be excellent value for players looking to go online and play fast games with their friends, as you really can't go too wrong with any of them.

However, if you want a platinum trophy for your online efforts, you're going to have to install the PS4 version before collecting Modern Warfare 3 trophies. Sadly, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 has no platinum trophy on PS5 for reasons that boggle the mind, so just be wary of that before jumping in.

1. Diablo IV

  • Release Date: June 5, 2023
  • Developer: Blizzard Team 3
  • Multiplayer mode: Cooperative, Competitive
  • Is it on PS Plus? No
Even if your friends on other devices can't relish the pure joy of collecting Diablo IV trophies, they can still join you on your many exquisite loot-filled adventures thanks to the game's cross-play feature. On PS5, you can also play the game split-screen, meaning you and your nearest and dearest can hit the online scene together and truly unleash hell in this addictive new RPG entry.

We've hopefully given you a good mix of online games to check out, but for those looking for more dedicated cooperative experiences, check out our list of the best coop games PS5 has to offer. Did we miss some of your favorite online multiplayer games? Let us know in the comments below!
