The 18 best PS5 multiplayer games for online play — ranked

The TrueTrophies writing team — that's Editor Kes and Staff Writers Lee and Sean — pooled together their collective experience of playing PS4 and PS5 multiplayer games online while creating this list of the best PS5 multiplayer games around.

This list will primarily focus on PS5 multiplayer games you can play online. To be clear: you won't find games like Fortnite or Fall Guys on this list as we'll be focusing on premium PS5 multiplayer games.

Check out the top 18 multiplayer PS5 games available to play online right now.

18. Hunt Showdown 1896

While the PS5 launch of Hunt Showdown did unfortunately result in the PS4 version of the game going offline, for those lucky enough to have a PS5, it's still a great online multiplayer experience.

Hunt Showdown 1896 has two main modes, both of which takes a little practice to get used to. There's Bounty Hunter, which puts you and a friend up against a computer-controlled boss somewhere in the world. Or, there's Soul Survivor, a battle royale mode that avoids getting stale by putting the focus on hunting down other players.

All of this action takes place in a world teeming with monsters and a unique grim Western vibe, making Hunt Showdown 1896 feel genuinely unique as a multiplayer experience. If you can wrap your head around the game's various modes, you'll find a lot to love here.

17. Dead by Daylight

  • Here are the Dead by Daylight trophies
  • Release Date: November 12, 2020
  • Multiplayer mode: Competitive, Cooperative
  • Is it on PS Plus? Yes; PS Plus Extra
With its addictive core gameplay loop and constantly updating roster — which sees the likes of Resident Evil's Albert Wesker and Nicholas Cage joining the hunt — you can understand why players keep coming back to Dead by Daylight. While many titles can offer a similar asymmetrical hunter vs hunted gameplay, they often lack the variety that keeps players coming back again and again to this one. Plus, you and your friends can still access this game handily with a couple of PS Plus Extra subscriptions, so check it out.

16. Grand Theft Auto Online

With over ten years of consistent updates, it's fair to say that Grand Theft Auto Online is teeming with content. With GTA 6's PS5 release still rather far off, it's also pretty much the only new GTA content any of us are going to see for the foreseeable future. Online modes here range from cooperative heists to competitive deathmatches and everything in between, with the latest update The Chop Shop adding a whole new host of robberies and races to master.

15. Final Fantasy XIV Dawntrail

If you love the idea of working alongside or sparring with fellow players, but now and then you might enjoy just doing your own thing and hanging out in a world by yourself, then Final Fantasy XIV is definitely for you. The latest update, Dawntrail, has even more events to experience and levels to grind. Yet, the core experience here remains so pure that we recommend it to anyone.

14. Armored Core VI Fires of Rubicon

Look, obviously this one's not going to be to everyone's tastes. As you dive into Armored Core VI Fires of Rubicon, you'll notice that this is a game mostly about piloting mechs and getting blown up countless times by an unassailable wall of rockets and laser beams. Still, if you do push through and find all the glorious design beneath that tough exterior, you'll also find thousands of crazy people who love it just as much as you do online, and they're all ready for a fight.

13. Turbo Golf Racing

While it's a little light on content, there's no getting around just how hilarious and fun Turbo Golf Racing is to play on PS5. The core concept is simple: what if Rocket League ditched the stadiums and turned into a wild eight-player race.

You still have to juggle a ball the entire way across the course, and you'll need to deal with jerks unleashing special moves against you as you race. Still, it's amazing how that simple twist to the formula can revitalise an online gaming experience. Plus, it makes for an extra great time when played with friends online, so convince them to pick up a copy and play a few rounds.

12. Harry Potter Quidditch Champions

Harry Potter Quidditch Champions took us by surprise when it launched day-one on PS Plus in September 2024! The rules of the fictional sport Quidditch have never really been ideal for a real game — we just keep scoring goals for ten minutes then someone catches the Snitch and they're (usually) the winner? Sounds exhausting.

However, with some clever tweaks to the established rules, Harry Potter Quidditch Champions makes the sport into something genuinely enjoyable. Once you get over the slippery controls, it's a great PS5 game to try out with friends online. Plus, it's got a pretty easy platinum trophy if you follow our Harry Potter Quidditch Champions trophy tips!

11. Among Us

  • Here are the Among Us trophies
  • Release Date: December 14, 2021
  • Multiplayer mode: Team-based Competitive
  • Is it on PS Plus? No
If you somehow haven't heard of this addictive social deduction game, you really ought to give it a go with some friends. Each game of Among Us has you playing either the role of a crewmate or an imposter, offering a wildly difference experience depending on who you get.

The monstrous imposters are tasked with killing all the crewmates, while the crewmates have to vote on who they think the imposter is. Among Us is simple, hilarious, and filled with loads of twists and turns that'll keep you and your friends entertained for ages.

10. Warhammer 40K Space Marine 2

It feels like it's been a long time since we've had a big, popular third-person shooter with a solid campaign that also happens to have a ridiculously fun multiplayer mode strapped in as a bonus. Yet, that's exactly what we've got with Warhammer 40K Space Marine 2 on PS5 — a callback to the era of fun shooters that kept you hooked with some addictive multiplayer options.

Not only is there a fun three-player co-op campaign to play with a few bonus missions added on, but there's also a great 6v6 competitive multiplayer mode here too. The competitive mode in particular has the fast-and-loose feel of older third-person shooters like the early Gears of War games, so it comes highly recommended if you miss a little bit of that action in your PS5 gaming life.

9. Gran Turismo 7

In case our glowing Gran Turismo 7 review didn't give it away, we think Polyphony Digital's latest exquisite car simulator is absolutely brilliant. Sure, those trophies can reach otherworldly levels of stinginess, but at the end of the day, you've got yourself a racer that has more love and attention poured into it than any other on the market. Plus, if you ever want to make yourself throw up while playing with your friends, try racing them with a PSVR2 headset on — it's quite the experience!

8. Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree

  • Here are the Elden Ring trophies
  • Release Date: February 25, 2022
  • Multiplayer mode: Competitive, Cooperative
  • Is it on PS Plus? No
FromSoftware games are notoriously difficult even when played with friends. If getting your head caved in by a tall dude on a horse one hundred times doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, you are well within your right to pass on to the next entry.

That said, if having your head cave in does sound like your cup of tea, then good news — Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree is better with friends. Working together to scrape through boss encounters, both with friends and strangers, can be just as challenging and just as rewarding as scraping through solo. Also, the expansion refreshed the online meta, meaning it's a great time to find out how messed up it is online.

7. Sea of Thieves

  • Here are the Sea of Thieves trophies
  • Release Date: April 30, 2024
  • Multiplayer mode: Cooperative, Competitive
  • Is it on PS Plus? No
Sea of Thieves is already one of the best Xbox online multiplayer games, so naturally it makes sense that it’s also one of the best PS5 online multiplayer games now that it’s available on PlayStation.

Now, be warned: PS5 players that have played more than their fair share of online games might be a little put out while playing Sea of Thieves. In the interests of keeping online matchmaking more fair, the game has done away with the typical leveling systems and gear advantages you’ll find in games like Destiny 2. So, leveling up won’t make your ship faster or your gun bigger, and that might not be your speed.

However, if you can chill with Sea of Thieves and enjoy it for the sheer adventure alone, you’ll find there’s much to love in this pirate simulator. It’s like a social media platform for friends who like to talk and work at the same time — only your work is being a pirate. Also, your friends are pirates. In summary: Sea of Thieves is a pirate social media platform and it’s great.

6. Baldur's Gate III

  • Here are the Baldur's Gate III trophies
  • Release Date: September 6, 2023
  • Multiplayer mode: Cooperative
  • Is it on PS Plus? Trial version via PS Plus Premium
This RPG comes with one of my absolute favorite features: local split-screen co-op that you can also take online to play with your friends. For that reason alone, you absolutely need to try this massive, critically acclaimed PS5 game. Though if you need another few reasons, perhaps Sean's Baldur's Gate III first impressions will convince you to check it out.

5. Street Fighter 6

While I don't want to say something reckless like "the new accessible Modern Controls will make you feel like a pro at Street Fighter 6" or something as reckless as that, I do want to recommend actually trying this one online. That's not a recommendation I make for fighting games often — and trust me, those online Street Fighter players are definitely vicious animals — but this one has a strong ranking system and really does benefit from the new control scheme, so I heartily recommend it.

4. Remnant II

  • Here are the Remnant II trophies
  • Release Date: July 25, 2023
  • Multiplayer mode: Cooperative
  • Is it on PS Plus? Yes; PS Plus Extra
Remnant From the Ashes offered players a twisting, challenging new alternative to the Destiny formula for those who gave it a shot, but the title was always missing that little bit of polish. That's where Remnant II comes in, bringing a revised format and even more action that has absolutely delighted fans of the original. Now that the game's also available on PS Plus Extra, it's an even better time to jump into this one!

3. Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3

  • The trophies for this Modern Warfare 3 are attached to the Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 trophies
  • Release Date: November 10, 2023
  • Multiplayer mode: Competitive, Cooperative
  • Is it on PS Plus? No
While the third game in the Modern Warfare reboot series has little to talk about in terms of a campaign, it continues to shine when it comes to online multiplayer. Alongside the usual multiplayer refresh we're used to seeing from the series, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 also sees the return of Zombies, and this co-op survival mode is just as much fun as we remember it being. These games continue to be excellent value for players looking to go online and play fast games with their friends, as you really can't go too wrong with any of them.

However, if you want a platinum trophy for your online efforts, you're going to have to install the PS4 version before collecting Modern Warfare 3 trophies. Sadly, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 has no platinum trophy on PS5 for reasons that boggle the mind, so just be wary of that before jumping in.

2. Diablo IV

  • Here are the Diablo IV trophies
  • Release Date: June 5, 2023
  • Multiplayer mode: Cooperative, Competitive
  • Is it on PS Plus? No
Even if your friends on other devices can't relish the pure joy of collecting trophies, they can still join you on your many exquisite loot-filled adventures thanks to the game's cross-play feature. On PS5, you can also play the game split-screen, meaning you and your nearest and dearest can hit the online scene together and truly unleash hell in this addictive new RPG entry.

1. Helldivers 2

  • Here are the Helldivers 2 trophies
  • Release Date: February 8, 2024
  • Multiplayer mode: Cooperative
  • Is it on PS Plus? No
With the remarkably rare boast of maintaining a PS5 player count surge for three weeks, Helldivers 2 is going wild in terms of sales and social media right now for one reason: it's genuinely fun. Sure, it's an unrelentingly difficult shooter that throws a lot at the player, but you know what solves that issue: online multiplayer.

Banding together with a group of friends (or strangers) and trying to survive horde after horde of insect nightmares is simply a blast, and a couple of good players in your team can really help make up for anyone having a hard time succeeding here. The only downside is that sometimes your friends might shoot you in the head with friendly fire, but hey — that's the price we have to pay for managed democracy.

We've hopefully given you a good mix of online games to check out, but if you want more recommendations, you'll find some of the most popular online PS5 games on our free PS5 games list. Did we miss some of your favorite online multiplayer games? Let us know in the comments below!
