This week, the PlayStation Chart is dedicated to Astro Bot's PS5 player count in week two after the PlayStation Studios title maintained its upward momentum for a second week. With our sample of 3.1 million PSN accounts (courtesy of GameInsights, using a range of data from beyond TrueTrophies accounts), let's take a look at the top 40 most popular PS5 and PS4 games of the last week.

Astro Bot's popularity grows in its second week on PS5

Astro Bot had a good first week of release when it finished in the #8 position after only three days on sale. However, this week the PlayStation Studios-published PS5 exclusive managed to climb four more places in the chart to position #4. In total, the player count increased by 29.2% week-on-week, sending Astro Bot soaring up the popularity rankings.
Indeed, this is an impressive feat and a common trend amongst so-called 'viral' games. Astro Bot has found critical success, but arguably more important for its popularity,Team Asobi seems to have found social success for the platformer. That has sent this little ode to all things PlayStation into a steady upward trajectory.

You'll find this trend amongst games that might be from niche genres or games that don't have any initial traction in the pre-release cycle. For example, back in August 2024, Black Myth Wukong found social success which not only gave it a good debut, but also gave it sustained popularity after launch.

As more people talked about the game online, it became more of a curiosity to friends, commentators, and influencers. Only now — over half-way through September 2024 — are we seeing the Chinese-made game dropping two places to #6. That's not even a terrible drop for a single-player game in its fourth week of sale.
If Astro Bot can keep growing or even stabilize its growth in its third week of release, I think we'll be able to say with confidence that Astro Bot is the sixth-most popular single-player game of 2024 even beyond its debut.

However, if it drops off, I still have a feeling it will rebound in the holiday season when families start spending money on child-friendly games. After all, what better option is there for a gift than one of the best PS5 platformers ever?

If you are looking for more beyond Astro Bot's success in the chart, Lee has already broken down Harry Potter Quidditch Champions' PS5 player count depreciation. I think a big success story this week in a similar vein to Astro Bot is seeing Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine 2 in #12 — up from #34 last week. This unbelievable rise is once again fuelled by just how well the shooter has been received by fans, who, in turn, have spread it to a bigger fanbase!
That wraps up some of the biggest and best PS5 games available right now amongst our sample. What do you think of Astro Bot's success? Let us know in the comments and I'll see you down there, TrueTrophies analysts!

Chart compiled using gameplay data from over 3.1 million active PlayStation accounts (not just TrueTrophies accounts). Chart information is copyright GameInsights. Regarding this data:
  • When an account opens a game, this is registered as a game being played. Accounts can only register a game once per week.
  • Our data is good for suggesting general trends — we represent this using percentages, not numbers.
