2013's Runner2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien might not be the most popular game on the site, but it holds steady at a 4.5/5 star user rating. Sadly, its predecessor from 2010, Bit.Trip Runner, never made its way to Xbox and PlayStation. Fans of the bright, bouncy and rhythmic platforming series will be pleased to know the developers have confirmed a third installment for this upcoming year.
The teaser trailer doesn't give much to go on, but Choice Provisions, the developers, have gone into much more detail on Runner3's official website. You also might not recognize that name — Choice Provisions. The team was formerly known as Gaijin Games, but make no mistake it's the same folks working on the third title that worked on the previous installments.
In a dev-blog the team talks about difficulty, drunk pickles, making the game fun and wanting to top Commander Video's previous adventures in every way. Here are a few choice quotes:
If you like being challenged relentlessly, will you get that? Yes. (It is us, after all.) But if you prefer being able to experience the entire game without being ultra-challenged, you'll be able to do that as well--without penalty. We have some very interesting tricks up our sleeve as to how we're going to accomplish this, and we'll be revealing them here over the course of development, so keep checking back.
Our hope for Runner3 is the same as our hope was for Runner2: to challenge ourselves to make a game that outdoes its predecessor in every possible way. It’s a lofty goal, but we plan to do whatever it takes to make it happen. That's all we know about Runner3 at the moment. If you'd like to know more, Choice Provisions has promised to keep the updates to their dev-blog regular, and you can keep an eye on their Twitter too. Runner3 will be available in 2017 with release platforms yet to be announced.
Whether or not we’ll be able to outdo a playable drunk pickle remains to be seen.
