TT Top Five: Easter Eggs

By Fangs-Flock, 10 months ago
It is almost that time of year again where a giant yellow bunny delivers chocolate eggs to people around the world to celebrate a religious event. Because eating a brown egg that comes out the behind of a rabbit makes any sense. I could swear I was going somewhere with this, oh yes, Easter Eggs. These are things that the developers have snuck into their games as cool little references to something in the pop culture world, teasing a future project, or just something completely random in some cases. So while we wait to eat our "chocolate" eggs, let's look at some of the cool Easter Eggs in games. Be warned, some spoilers may leak through.

HONOURABLE MENTIONS

Halo 4 - Conan O'Brien & Andy Richter

The only Xbox exclusive title on our list sees two randomly placed soldiers just standing by some crates. We see these kind of placements in almost every game like this, but what could they possibly have to talk about? Insert legendary talk show host, and occasional Clueless Gamer, Conan O'Brian and his partner-in-crime Andy Richter. At a certain point in the level, these two seemingly random soldiers, voiced by the comedy duo, begin to have random conversations about adding some rugs to the room to brighten things up, questioning why they are just standing next to crates and possibly a bit of foreshadowing to the plot of the game.

Far Cry 4 - Hidden Ending

There are two ways of beating this game. The first is the default way, by playing the game for several hours, blowing up bad guys, spending forever driving across the map, and trying to kill a Rhino with a Bow and Arrow. The other way is to simply do nothing. That's right, at the beginning of the game when you first gain control of your character, Pagan Min attends to some business and asks you to stay put. Naturally you know better and escape. If you do as he asks, however, and just put the controller down and wait 10 minutes, Pagan will return and the two of you will ride out into the sunset in his helicopter and the credits will roll.

TOP FIVE

5 - Tom Clancy's The Division - 'The Cornetto Trilogy' reference

The best thing about this Easter Egg is that it is kind of referencing another Easter Egg. During the Edgar Wright "Cornetto Trilogy" starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, each of the three movies make a point in having a scene involving taking a shortcut through and over some fences. As cool as these moments are in the films, it is even cooler that the same thing recently appeared in The Division

4 - Just Cause 2 - The LOST Island

There is an island in the game called 'Hantu Island', located at co-ordinates X:2290; Y:2220. This island is basically an homage to the TV show Lost. On the island, there are several references to the show, including the Smoke Monster, one of the many things the show took and went completely overboard with, a crashed plane on the beach, and the famous hatch. We are guessing that John Locke is down there giving a speech about his destiny or some annoying rant.

3 - Borderlands 2 - Minecraft Cave

The Borderlands series is one that is jam-packed with Easter Eggs and pop culture references, but this one has that extra little something to beat them all. Not only is there a cave that is an homage to Minecraft, but you actually get to smash up some blocks Minecraft-style with your melee attack and fight off some creepers (and yes, they do explode).

2 - Batman: Arkham Knight - The Voicemails

At a certain point in the game, you will find yourself inside Bruce Wayne's office. There are a couple of cool little things in here, like the Wayne family portraits, but the most notable thing is his answering machine. Who calls Bruce Wayne, you ask? Well, a collection of famous DC characters who just want to do their best to cameo. Stand over the machine and brood as you listen to voicemails from journalist Vicki Vale, Kate Kain AKA Batwoman calling to announce her engagement to Detective Maggie Sawyer, and a business proposal from the villainous Lex Luthor. Other calls include one from a girl named Cassie, who we can't help but think is Cassandra Cain, one of the super-heroines who took up the mantle of Batgirl. Two other spoilery voicemails can also be heard, which are both funny yet slightly disturbing.

1 - Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception - The Last of Us newspaper

What kind of Easter Egg do you hide in the final part of a highly acclaimed trilogy? A teaser of the studios next epic adventure, of course. This one was kind of an accident; naughty Dog had expected to announce The Last of Us by the time Uncharted 3 released, but that never happened and almost accidentally spoiled the surprise. During the first chapter of the game, eagle-eyed gamers can spot a newspaper lying around that has the headline "Scientists are still struggling to understand deadly fungus", which is referring to the cordyceps infection that is the driving point of Last of Us.
