Axiom Verge Details New Powerups

By Rebecca Smith,
Axiom Verge puts players in the roll of a scientist, Trace, who regains consciousness after a laboratory accident that changes the world as he knew it. Players must find out what is going on through the means of exploration, defeating strange creatures and finding hidden weapons to assist in your journey.

Powerups are extremely important if players want to survive. Developer Tom Happ has described just some of those that players will uncover in this new world. The first is a new weapon, the Nova. The Nova has two types of fire. The first allows players to fire the weapon normally. Its larger size means that it is easier for players to hit their target, but the rate of fire is slow. However, if players fire the weapon using its second type of fire, they can detonate the ammo in mid-air. This splits the ammo into six pieces that break off in different directions, allowing players to hit objects or enemies that aren't within the normal line of fire.

The second powerup is a drill, which is awarded to players after they defeat the game's first boss. While it can be used to drill through rocks and open up new ways to progress, the drill can also be used on other materials. Use this powerup to discover hidden health upgrades and weapons.

The final revealed powerup is the address disruptor, otherwise known as a "glitch ray" that will "corrupt" the world around the player. All enemies can be glitched and this will make them behave differently. Will you take a risk and glitch an enemy just to see what it does? Happ is hoping that you will.

If you want to see some of these powerups in action, we suggest that you head over to the Playstation blog to check out the embedded gif files. Otherwise, you can wait and see for yourself when the game arrives on Playstation 4 in North America on March 31st and in Europe on April 1st for $19.99 or regional equivalent.

While the game will be heading to Vita, this version of the title still needs some more work, so we don't yet have a release date for this. However, the game will be Cross-Buy, so PS4 players will be able to play the game on their Vita as soon as it is released at no extra charge.
