Lost Orbit Coming to PS4

By Cindy Minguez,
Lost Orbit from Pixelnauts has now been officially announced for PS4. The "dodge 'em up" introduces us to Harrison, a lowly maintenance man forced into the hero role when he's the lone survivor of a disaster that destroys his ship in deep space.

Chris Iacobucci from Pixelnauts gives us more insight into the game:

It’s been a challenge defining Lost Orbit from the beginning. At its core, it is a fast paced action game, but there are flowing moments of serenity. It’s not unfair to describe it, as we often have, as a death simulator. It’s the union of three distinct elements: fast paced action, flowing cathartic flight, and death. In truth, the best way to describe it is to make up a new phrase: Lost Orbit is a dodge ‘em up.

The fast-paced action comes in as you try to keep Harrison alive. He can't stay in deep space, so he has to get out...quickly. With an easy-to-learn game mechanic, it's your job to race Harrison through space, shooting him through gaps, launching him forward in order to escape starving or freezing in space. The fun comes in the frantic speed of having to move our poor hero, but the faster you go, the more danger, too. One mis-step, and Harrison dies.

To give players a breather from so much action, the developer has worked to make Lost Orbit a beautiful game:

There are plenty of moments for the player to take in the beauty of the game, and lazily float and dart their way through open space. It’s a good balance for the white-knuckle twitch-fest that is the meat of the game.

And, finally, there's death - a lot of it - and it's always your death as our lone austronaut fails to make it to safety again and again. You're given the option of serenely watching the mangled remains of your lost hero float away into the beauty of space, or you can skip death scenes and jump straight back into the action. Either way, death is such an expected component of the game, the developers have invested th experience with humor to make it more palatable.

Lost Orbit is due out in early 2015 on the PS4. If you happen to be in Las Vegas for the PlayStation Experience event on December 6th-7th, Pixelnauts will be there with a playable demo.
