The top 40 most popular PS5 games chart holds a surprise for one of the best PS5 games this week as our 3.2 million tracked PSN accounts show that A Plague Tale Requiem isn't the most popular PS Plus games of the month. That is shocking!

Evil West somehow became the most popular PS Plus game of January 2024

We don't mean to slate Evil West, it's a fabulous AA FPS with more than enough bombast and personality to deserve a high spot on our list. However, amongst the PlayStation Plus January 2024, we had A Plague Tale Requiem pegged as the game to beat. However, here we are, with Evil West in the seventh most popular position and Requiem in 20th. Evil West pulled in an 87% larger player base, too.
Let's also not breeze past the wonderful indie Nobody Saves The World, either. Also on PS Plus this month, it's swept into the chart at 15th, five places higher than A Plague Tale Requiem. If you ever wanted a yardstick that showed that having the PS4 player base behind you is still vital, I feel like this would be it.

Put simply, A Plague Tale Requiem is less popular because it is PS5-only. While for most AAA games the PS5 version is outperforming the PS4 version, that doesn't make last-gen's player base negligible. In most cases, it's still between a third and a fifth of the total amount of players.

This week, we've also just got to admire games like Horizon Forbidden West floating around at the bottom of the chart in 35th, Warframe at 37th, and Battlefield 2042 at 39th. Why? Well, our three PS Plus games are all debuts, so all three games have somehow managed to gain a place in the chart when they were effectively being handed a three-position handicap.
If you want any more data stories, Lee did a deep dive into Monster Hunter Wilds PS5 reveal. Are you thinking that Evil West is a massive surprise winner too? Get in the comments to let us know! Chart compiled using gameplay data from over 3.2 million active PlayStation accounts (not just TrueTrophies accounts). Chart information is copyright GameInsights. Regarding this data:
  • When an account opens a game, this is registered as a game being played. Accounts can only register a game once per week.
  • Our data is good for suggesting general trends — we represent this using percentages, not numbers.
