With 3.3 million active PSN accounts scanned, we've generated a chart of the top 40 most popular PS5 games around for the week — from the established best PS5 games to the newest releases. This week, we've got the heroes of Marvel's Spider-Man 2 in a showdown against the grand villain, Call of Duty Modern Warfare III.

Call of Duty dukes it out as one of the most popular PS5 games

Call of Duty Modern Warfare III might not appear by name on the list of 40 games below, but it is there under the Call of Duty Modern Warfare II name. You can read all about that in Lee's article about why it has no platinum trophy, but the long and short of it is that the MWII app will soon become Call of Duty HQ — a hub from which you can access the latest campaign and Zombies mode. In any case, the game has a 39.8% larger player count than Marvel's Spider-Man 2 in our sample of players.
That's a ginormous gap, but it's important to respect two things about the player count figure. The first is that Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is a single-player game, so when people finish it they don't jump back — player retention is definitely easier for multiplayer games like MWIII. With its third week in the chart, it's only reasonable Spider-Man has seen 26.6% week-on-week player decrease.

However, the second point you need to consider is that Call of Duty's player count will have MWII players included with MWIII players. Given that players of this franchise will move from game to game the moment the new title comes out and will all be marked down as "MWII players" on PSN, it makes it impossible for us to tell just how high MWIII's player count total actually is.

Also in the top ten games for PS5 in the chart is Aliens Fireteam Elite. You can thank PS Plus November 2023 for that as its inclusion in the Essential monthly games has bumped it up to tenth on the chart. If we are being frank, we don't think it is the best game in the world, but as a multiplayer game available for 'free,' we can see plenty of players dropping in to give it a try with friends.
That leaves two other PS Plus games for the week. In second place of these three is, perhaps surprisingly, Dragon Ball: The Breakers. Yep, it's a big IP, but anime titles still serve a relative niche. In any case, it comes in 21st amongst the most popular games suggesting that this round of Essential games has largely left players interested as they usually start a little stronger.

Finally, you have Mafia 2 Definitive Edition which is in 26th place in the table. It looks like players weren't as fond of grabbing this entry as the first Mafia Definitive Edition and it won't exactly be making our stacked list of best Playstation Plus games anytime soon. That wraps up the analysis! What do you think of the spread of games this week? Without further ado, here are the top 40 most popular PS5 games for the week ending Sunday, November 12, 2023.

Chart compiled using gameplay data from over 3.2 million active PlayStation accounts (not just TrueTrophies accounts). Chart information is copyright GameInsights. Regarding this data:
  • Popularity is measured by a game being booted up and played, not by the length of time played.
  • Our data is good for suggesting general trends — we represent this using percentages, not numbers.
