Oh, how we laughed — it seemed ridiculous to think that PS5 players would rush to unlock more Uno trophies after the game received a free PS5 upgrade on Thursday, November 2, 2023. So, we teased it for falling short of the best PlayStation Plus games list, and look what happened: the Uno fans started showing up. Now, we live in a world where a massive Uno PS Plus Extra player boost has happened, and it's truly all our fault.

Uno free PS5 upgrade brings resurgence in PS Plus game

We've been tracking the active player count of every big PS5 game launch in 2023 with our exclusive gameplay data from 3.2 million active PSN accounts (courtesy of our partnership with GameInsights), and we're baffled to say that Uno qualifies for that tracking. I was joking when I said that PS Plus Extra getting Uno for PS5 was a big deal, but it seems the joke is on me, because it actually kind of was a big deal.
Looking over the PS5 and PS4 player data for the week ending Sunday, November 6, 2023 — the week in which the free PS5 upgrade for Uno launched — it's clear to see that Uno's player count shot up by 165.8%. However, as for the specific factors which led to this surge in Uno popularity, we can't be 100% sure.

The fact that the game is pretty inexpensive on the PS Store probably helped. It can't have hurt that PS4 users who already owned Uno were entitled to pick up the PS5 upgrade for free. Plus, with both versions of the game available on PS Plus Extra, that means many subscribers could take advantage of Uno's day-one PS Plus launch.

Uno PS PlusIs this just... maddeningly good?

Either way, the game shot right up to number 64 in the top 200 most-played PS5 and PS4 games that week. That means Uno almost qualified for our top 40 PlayStation Chart, which is, frankly, wild. That high rank also means that more PS5 and PS4 players played played Uno last week than Bloodborne, any Metal Gear Solid game, Star Wars Jedi Survivor, or even that Halloween Puzzle free platinum trophy game.

I mean, this is the real "Hallowe'en puzzle" here, if you know what I mean. What on earth had so many people playing Uno on PS Plus last week? Has this actually been one of the best PS5 games of all time and I simply couldn't see it? Or is there something more nefarious at work here? Either way, join me in Uno-reversing my stance on this game down in the comments below.

Chart compiled using gameplay data from over 3.2 million active PlayStation accounts (not just TrueTrophies accounts). Chart information is copyright GameInsights. Regarding this data:
  • Popularity is measured by a game being booted up and played, not by the length of time played.
  • Our data is good for suggesting general trends — we represent this using percentages, not numbers.
