Fans are jumping on the Metal Gear Solid trophies thanks to the recent Master Collection release on PS5 and PS4, that has given the series a new lease of life. However, it's the Metal Gear Solid player count that has us feeling pleasantly surprised.

Metal Gear Solid player count outshines both MGS2 and MGS3 on PS5

With our sample of 3.2 million PSN accounts that power our PlayStation Chart every week (courtesy of our partnership with GameInsights), we've had a look at which of the new Metal Gear Solid Master Collection titles has been the most popular over the first week of release. As it turns out, players love release order and not chronological order as 60.7% of players opted to play Metal Gear Solid over the chronological first game, MGS3. 61.01% of players chose MGS1 over MGS2 and 70.91% of players chose MGS1 over Metal Gear 1&2.
A player is counted when they activate any of the four games in the collection. The same person can be counted up to four times if they booted up every game in the Master Collection, which we would assume to be the case if players are jumping in and out of different titles in the series.

While we are sure that the vast majority of players choosing to jump into MGS1 first aren't overly bothered about grabbing a platinum, it's just an interesting comparison to make. If players are choosing MGS1 so that they can play the series in release order, then Metal Gear 1&2 should technically be where players start. However, that game is the least played of the bunch within the Master Collection.
As an avid trophy hunter, I'm choosing to believe it is the trophies that have seen MGS1 receive the most player interest. However, the more likely scenario is that players are choosing to play the games in release order, but skipping over Metal Gear 1&2 due to them being substantially older and less fine-tuned than the rest of the series. With MGS3 being a big fan favorite, I am surprised to see it being beaten out by the first game in the series.

What do you make of the numbers? Surprised that MGS1 has surpassed all the other titles in the collection by an exceptional amount? Which title in the Master Collection are you playing? Should we add any of the titles to our hardest platinum trophies list? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

Chart compiled using gameplay data from over 3.2 million active PlayStation accounts (not just TrueTrophies accounts). Chart information is copyright GameInsights. Regarding this data:
  • When an account opens a game, this is registered as a game being played. Accounts can only register a game once per week.
  • Our sample data has more European accounts than PSN average.
  • Our data is good for suggesting general trends — we represent this using percentages, not numbers.
