The PlayStation Chart is here for this week bringing you the top 40 PS5 and PS4 games of the last 7 days derived from 3.2 million active PSN accounts. This week, it's all about the new releases with players picking up Mortal Kombat 1 trophies in bloody fashion while the racers head to Hawaii to grab the trinkets comprising The Crew Motorfest trophies.

Baldur's Gate 3 is gaining popularity week on week

Before we look at the new releases, let's give Larian Studios' RPG even more praise than Sean did in his Baldur's Gate 3 first impressions. The game has risen to ninth, its best finish yet after three weeks of steadily climbing. Interestingly, despite a climb in position, there is a total player count drop-off of 2.7%. However, games around BG3 — namely Minecraft — have shredded more players. Three weeks in, we think that it will hold strong around these spots.
So, let us move on to our debut duo. We have Mortal Kombat 1 slaying its way into the 16th position while The Crew Motorfest zooms past into 13th place. In some ways, there's a surprisingly large gap between the two total player counts from our sample: 34.2%. It's a large gap for MK1 to cover as it goes from early access into general release. At the moment, it seems unlikely to catch The Crew over the next few weeks in terms of popularity.

Racing games have a broader audience reach than fighting games, so I think that's probably a major factor that might help The Crew Motorfest stay above water. Add in the fact that it's been a while since we've had a big, open-world arcade racer — whereas Street Fighter 6 might've taken some of the air out of MK1's release — and that gives us a good idea of why The Crew Motorfest is doing so well.

Let's quickly talk about how Saints Row on PS Plus is still performing very well and has only dropped two places to seventh this week. Lee wrote all about how it's been the second-biggest PS Plus launch of the year and that is borne out in the chart with some serious consistency. It will slip in the future as new PS Plus games come and as we see more releases in this crazy window release — but holy moly! What a run it is on.
Well, that wraps up our analysis! When Sean is back, we'll have him popping Baldur's Gate 3 into the best PS5 games list! What do you think of the chart? Let us know in the comments below! Here are the top 40 PS5 and PS4 games in the PlayStation Chart for the week ending Sunday, September 17, 2023.

Chart compiled using gameplay data from over 3.2 million active PlayStation accounts (not just TrueTrophies accounts). Chart information is copyright GameInsights. Regarding this data:
  • Popularity is measured by a game being booted up and played, not by the length of time played.
  • Our data is good for suggesting general trends — we represent this using percentages, not numbers.
