In the September 2023 State of Play, Sony announced that the PS5 console exclusive Helldivers 2 release date in a new gameplay trailer.When does Helldivers 2 release on PS5?Helldivers 2 will be released on PS5 and PC on Thursday, February 8, 2024, a delay from its original late 2023 slot. This is probably a great play from developer Arrowhead Game Studio and publisher Sony, however. The late 2023 period has become incredibly busy and likely wouldn't give Helldivers 2 the chance to shine. An early February 2023 release allows much more space for the hardcore co-op third-person-shooter to breathe while getting a free run at a marketing cycle backed by Sony without having to fight with competition.Now, the gameplay itself is really cool, too. It's a section called Bile Total Liberation and the commentary track is led by CEO and creative director Johan Pilestedt. You can see some of the main game missions selected that can be from the ship, as well as the pods that will shoot you down to the planet's surface. Upon landing, we get some lovely fake in-game chatter from 'players' in truly awful 2015 E3 style — I love it. Mostly, it's there to showcase that you'll almost certainly need to be chattering with teammates while playing and killing various enemy bugs.It's pretty gorgeous, even when you get demolished by the acid spray of a giant bug. I love all the mechanical stuff going on with the player characters like moving metal plates on backpacks or teammates having to help reloads of heavy weapons. Also: teamkilling. That's what made the original game so unique so it's great to see it here. There is chatter of complex upgrade systems and a hint at PvP right at the end that has me intrigued.Helldivers 2 releases February 2024Ultimately, it was a solid showcase for one of the games that Sony is banking on filling the early quota of live-service games. The game looks gorgeous, sounds gorgeous, and isn't taking itself too seriously. Getting hands-on will be an essential part of me really buying into the game, as ever with a shooter. However, the signs are there with the shift from top-down to third-person that Arrowhead is really going to try and make its formula work.Preorders will be available on Friday, September 22, 2023.
