Gran Turismo 7's PS5 player count has always been rather strong, but the PlayStation Studios racer saw a slight boost in players in the wake of the 2023 movie.

It seems Neill Blomkamp's Gran Turismo, the 2023 cinematic adaptation of the popular PlayStation series, may have had a hand in a recent upsurge in players collecting Gran Turismo 7 trophies as of late. In the same week as the movie's debut, Gran Turismo 7's PS5 player count jumped by 13% — an increase that would have looked more dramatic were we not talking about one of the best PS5 games around.

Gran Turismo 7 player count remains high on PS5, PS4

According to our exclusive gameplay data from 3.2 million active PSN accounts (courtesy of our partnership with GameInsights), Gran Turismo 7 saw a 13.82% rise in PS5 and PS4 players between Monday, August 7, 2023, and Monday, August 13, 2023. The Gran Turismo movie was released on Friday, August 11, 2023 in the United States and in the United Kingdom on Wednesday, August 9, 2023.
However, looking at our weekly top 40 PlayStation Chart, you won't have noticed a particularly dramatic change. Gran Turismo 7 moved up from the 24th spot on August 7, 2023 to become the 19th most popular PlayStation game as of August 13, 2023. Yet, that somewhat undersells just how consistently popular Gran Turismo 7 has been on PS5 and PS4.

For comparison, only two PlayStation Studios titles have seen more active PS5 and PS4 players at any point over July and August 2023 — Marvel's Spider-Man Miles Morales for two weeks in July (aided by its own movie and a recent Marvel's Spider-Man 2-influenced player increase), and Dreams the week it came to PS Plus Essential. Gran Turismo 7 didn't even need the movie's release to retake its spot above them — that's just how popular the game is.
This means that all other PlayStation Studios titles, and quite a number of 2023's biggest games, have so far failed to see more active PS5 and PS4 players during July and August 2023 than Gran Turismo 7. That list of titles includes God of War Ragnarok, Horizon Forbidden West, Ghost of Tsushima, Hogwarts Legacy, Resident Evil 4, Elden Ring, and tons more titles of similar import and renown.

This somewhat helps to explain why the post-movie player surge for Gran Turismo 7 seems so conservative compared to the 270% boost The Last of Us TV Show brought both games in that series. Unlike those games, Gran Turismo 7's active player count never quite died off, so there wouldn't be as big a difference when the movie brought players back or enticed new players to check it out for the first time.
On the other hand, it's still not entirely clear just how popular or influential the Gran Turismo movie actually is. We can certainly see it has made some impact on the game's player count, though if the film had HBO's The Last of Us' general virality, perhaps that 13% wouldn't appear so modest after all. Plus, as popular as Gran Turismo 7 is, it's not quite in the same realm as the many bigger games of July and August 2023 — games like Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, Fortnite, Overwatch 2, Diablo IV, or even Final Fantasy XVI.

At the end of the day, Gran Turismo 7 is still one of the best racing games on PlayStation. The game has proven remarkably popular since its launch in early 2022, and we dare say it will continue to be popular on PS5 and PS4 long after its cinematic namesake leaves theatres. Chart compiled using gameplay data from over 3.2 million active PlayStation accounts (not just TrueTrophies accounts). Chart information is copyright GameInsights. Regarding this data:
  • When an account opens a game, this is registered as a game being played. Accounts can only register a game once per week.
  • Our sample data has more European accounts than PSN average.
  • Our data is good for suggesting general trends — we represent this using percentages, not numbers.
