If you've long finished collecting all those Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 trophies and are eager to hear about what's next for the series, well, there's some bad news — we still don't know any real details about the next Call of Duty game. However, we do have an update from Activision Blizzard confirming that more Call of Duty will come to PS5 in 2023, and if history's any indicator, it'll still likely be one of the best FPS games on PlayStation.

When will the new Call of Duty come out on PS5 and PS4?

As clarified by Activision in its latest earnings report, the next mainline Call of Duty for PS5 and PS4 will release in Q4 2023 — so sometime between October and December of this year. According to the report: "Activision’s teams are hard at work on major new installments in the franchise slated for the fourth quarter. Development of this year's full annual premium release on PC and console is proceeding well."
Fans might have been somewhat concerned as of late that Call of Duty might not appear on PlayStation consoles in 2023 due to the ongoing acquisition of Activision Blizzard by Sony's rival, Microsoft. However, as of Sunday, July 16, 2023, Microsoft and Sony have signed a Call of Duty deal that will ensure the series continues to release on PS5 for the foreseeable future.

That said, it is certainly odd to have gone this far in the year without any details of the upcoming Call of Duty title. The previous entry, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, was getting visual teases around April 2022 time, and then was revealed with its October release date in May of that year. Now we're in July of 2023 and we still haven't got word of Modern Warfare 2's follow-up — no name, no hard release date; nothing.
We did hear that this 2023's Call of Duty might not exactly be a full release, with Activision having toyed with the idea of releasing a big Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 story expansion instead. That report has remained unconfirmed since November 2022, however, so it's unclear whether or not Activision still plans to take this approach.

With Call of Duty recently rocking a 15% active player share on PS5, suffice it to say that a lot of players are probably very eager to hear more about the next entry in the series. How about you, though? Are you looking forward to playing the next Call of Duty? Are your hopes high that it will be one of the best online multiplayer games on PS5 and PS4?
