Iconic PSP series teases spiritual successor after 12-year absence Ex-Sony Japan Studio creatives took the stage at a recent event to reveal a Patapon spiritual successor — but will we see a Ratatan PS5 release?Lee Brady Published 17 Jul 2023 FollowtopicsPatapon RemasteredSony Interactive EntertainmentLee Brady It's been 12 years since the release of Patapon 3 — the last new title in the beloved PSP series, and the only one that didn't get the same PS4 treatment as those Patapon Remastered trophies. Fans holding their breath for the game to get PSP trophy support on PS Plus might want to turn their attention towards the newly-announced Patapon spiritual successor and perhaps start praying that a Ratatan PS5 release in on the cards.Ratatan brings classic PSP series revival to KickstarterRatatan was announced to be in development alongside all the other PlayStation Indies at BitSummit 2023, with developers Ratata Arts dropping a teaser trailer and some promotional art. The indie devs also dropped the launch date of the game's upcoming Kickstarter campaign: Monday, July 31, 2023.Hopefully, we'll learn a few more important details once the Kickstarter campaign launches, like whether Ratatan is intending to come to PS5 and PS4, when we can expect to play it, and whether it will actually play much like Patapon at all. The art released so far does suggest it will follow the PSP series' classic 2D perspective, art style, and real-time strategy vibe — whether we'll be drumming on those face buttons to get our little Ratatans in the mood to die by the hundreds has yet to be revealed.Ratatan is coming via original game designer Hiroyuki Kotani, and will also feature music from Patapon series composer Kenmei Adachi. Plus, with The Eye of Judgment's Kazuto Sakajiri involved, it truly feels like Ratatan marks something of a Sony Japan Studio reunion. Since Sony shuttered the first-party studio in 2021, I can't help but feel a tiny bit of PlayStation's creative soul has died — but it helps ease that loss a little to see these great creatives out there, finally getting to work on the stuff they wanted to work on like a new Patapon game. Will you be supporting Ratatan when it comes to Kickstarter? Do you reckon it has the potential to quickly become one of the best PlayStation indie games in a long while?
