PS Plus Extra solves the day-one puzzle as new game gets rave reviews

By Kes Eylers-Stephenson,

PS Plus Extra has just added Humanity as a day-one game for PS5 and PS4. It looks like Sony has picked right again, as it has received great reviews from critics.

Some of you might have been nervous about engaging with the Humanity trophies given it is a puzzle game led by a dog god. However, you have no need to fear the day one addition for the PS Plus Extra and Premium games for May 2023Sony has picked out another banger in Humanity that is getting great reviews from critics.

Humanity gets an 85 critical average

Oh, the Humanity! When this puzzler from developer Tha and publisher-of-all-things-weird Enhance was announced to be arriving on PS Plus Extra day one, we had no idea what to expect. However, Humanity has now accumulated an 85 average rating on OpenCritic and another 85 rating on Metacritic, with the lowest scores being in the '60s and the highest in the '90s. That puts it just ahead of Stray, Meet Your Maker, and Tchia, the three other day-one PS Plus Extra games of note.

Humanity is being praised for its wild Shiba-led Lemming-style puzzling, which involves leading people as a dog to a finish point. You'll face tricky obstacles to get those people where they need to be over the course of 90 levels, and indeed, there is a level builder too to keep yourself entertained. It has a great soundtrack with some simple but effective visuals, and the level of challenge seems to be just right once you get over an initially steep learning gradient. This really does seem like a perfect addition to PS Plus Extra's already comprehensive range of genres.
This is definitely an interesting game compared to the aforementioned day-one PS Plus Extra games. In our Stray review, we gave the game a 9/10 as the game made Sean feel all kinds of... what you call them? Emotions? Then we had Sean, after he mopped up his tears, do the Tchia review in which he loved the relaxed open-world collection, albeit a little less than Stray at an 8/10. Lee took on the Meet Your Maker first impressions and giver it a Gold trophy for its intriguing first few hours.

Now, Humanity comes onto the scene rocking an 85 on review aggregators making us think Sony has a knack for picking varied games to include on its services. A linear story-driven game, an open-world adventure, an FPS, and a weird puzzler all help round out PS Plus Extra's offerings in great ways and — to have them at launch — must really drive up the player count and generate interest in the game where it wouldn't have been otherwise.

Kes' take — PS Plus Extra is nailing day one quality

I have to say, on a personal note, I don't know if I've ever been more spoilt for choice than with a PS Plus Extra subscription. I sure do get intrigued by games I never would have touched otherwise (because money). I'm just always confident that any day-one game on PS Plus Extra is worth a play — that's an exciting place for my subscription service to be!
