Redfall isn't on PS5 — play these games with vampires and guns instead

By Kes Eylers-Stephenson and Lee Brady,

Redfall is an Xbox console-exclusive FPS featuring vampire co-op slaying, but don't worry — we have five PS5 games to replace it!

Arkane's vampire FPS Redfall is missing out on PS5, but we have you covered with five incredible alternative games available on PlayStation. Given the aforementioned Redfall's mediocre critical reception, you'll be pleased to know some games feature on our best PS5 games list and many of these titles have previously appeared amongst PS Plus' best games.

Deathloop

Two criticisms of Redfall keep coming up online — that the game’s open world is rather bland and that the mission design feels repetitive and mundane. Seeing these criticisms being levied at an Arkane Studios game after sinking time into collecting Deathloop trophies feels like waking up in an alternate dimension, because if there were two qualities Deathloop nails, it would be world and mission design. Though to be fair, Arkane's Lyon Studio made Deathloop and Arkane Austin made Redfall — two teams with different lineages in Arkane's gaming DNA.

Deathloop really only has one mission — a mission that sees protagonist Colt plotting to kill seven weirdos in a single run of the game’s Groundhog Day time-loop. Sink your teeth in and that mission fractures into a hundred smaller interconnected missions, all of which help you grow familiar with the exacting design of the not-quite-open world. These two design elements interweave and complement each other so effortlessly in Deathloop that I was led to presume Arkane just didn’t get tested on problems like these. Maybe back in my original dimension that’s still the case…

Vampire The Masquerade Bloodhunt

The Vampire The Masquerade Bloodhunt trophies are hard work, so do watch out if you take this suggestion, but this online battle royale features those key Redfall tenets — guns and vampires. We didn't have high hopes going into this third-person shooter, but the large-scale action is really quite good. You'll do the normal battle royale stuff: drop in as a team or solo, collect stuff, and try and survive until the end. However, with lovely vampire powers and classes comes extreme variety in gameplay and encounters — this game gets really feisty.

The map is a lovely showcase of verticality too, so while it is a little janky to control endlessly climbing vampires, it pays off in super bizarre top-down combat. Winning a game feels extraordinary and — if the players are still there — the last time we played there were some lovely, dedicated vampires online and entering the bloody arena. We highly recommend jumping into the action with some mates if you are missing Redfall's particular gameplay cocktail on PS5.

Back 4 Blood open betaBack 4 Blood dispenses with vampires, but has online zombie co-op action instead

Back 4 Blood

Yes, Back 4 Blood might not have quite made the zombie hoards come flocking on release, but it's worth a play. If you love co-op shooting and a variety of our esteemed undead friends, you are in no better hands than with Turtle Rock Studios (the Left 4 Dead developers). The Redfall vibes come strong given it's playable with a few mates and brings back the FPS action and, as an added bonus, it's been supported well over the last few years with new maps and plenty of characters to choose from. It's on PS Plus Extra too, so if you want to give the Back 4 Blood trophies a go the barrier to entry is incredibly low. Give it a spin for your Redfall-like co-op FPS fix... sans the vampires!

Definitive 7/24/15 Screen 10Dishonored Definitive Edition is one of Arkane's finest games

Kes

Dishonored Definitive Edition

Collecting every Dishonored Definitive Edition trophy is a pleasurable and complete ride through Arkane Studios' wonderful game — the Lyon-based portion of Arkane at least, rather than the Austin team that made Redfall. Basically, given the rather mediocre reviews that Redfall is picking up, we think it's well worth seeing what Arkane at full force can do. It's a first-person action adventure that takes place in the steampunk-adjacent land of Dunwall.

You'll have to choose between violence and peace as you skirt through levels avoiding or slaughtering guards in your way as you hunt for revenge as Corvo. From story to gameplay, this is a fantastically tight game that was originally released on PS3, was upgraded to PS4 with a Definitive Edition, and is playable on PS5 through backward compatibility. So, if you really want to see what Arkane has done with its special cocktail of choice-based action adventure that makes folks look unfavorably on Redfall, look no further than Dishonored Definitive Edition.

Castlevania Requiem Collection (Symphony of the Night)

When it comes to vampires, why mess with the rest when you can play the best? Redfall’s almost-modern graphics, co-op gameplay, and FPS mechanics are all well-and-good, but then again, is it Castlevania Symphony of the Night? I’ve had a quick check and, sadly, no — Redfall is not Symphony of the Night. And, if we’re having a toss-up between two games, one being Castlevania Symphony of the Night and the other being literally any other game ever, I’m afraid Castlevania wins it's that good.

Instead of playing inferior games, PS5 and PS4 players can instead pick up a copy of Castlevania Requiem and start earning Castlevania Requiem trophies — a list which happens to include Castlevania Symphony of the Night and the rather excellent Castlevania Rondo of Blood. With that, you can dive into Alucard’s world, take on the evil Richter Belmont, and forget all about Redfall's absence on PS5 or whatever we were talking about
